hello my cpu is i5 4590 and mobo is Asus B85M gamer with v6.03 latest bios can i use a Gskill Ripjaws 1600 mhz ram and use xmp to oc it to something like 1866 mhz :)

You would manually set the ram to run at whatever speeds you want that the ram can stably run at. Your Ram has speeds and timings programmed into the SPD, most SPD modes are made for motherboard compatibility and will not run the RAM as fast as it is rated for if it is high speed memory (non jedec standard speeds and timings). The XMP is just a special SPD profile that give your a pre programmed speed and timings that are above Jedec standards. If you enable XMP it will just read this profile and use whatever speed and timings are in it. In manual overclocking you set the speed and timings manually and can get even better speeds and timings compared to XMP.. So XMP is not really overclocking at all, it is just an easy way for people to set their RAM to it's maximum Manufacturers assigned speed.

so if the gskill ripjaws ram is rated at 1600 mhz will enabling xmp on my mobo which is https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/B85MGAMER/HelpDesk_QVL/ this will give extra mhz benefits :(

No you will need to manually set the RAM speed in the BIOS. XMP is used for when the RAM is rated at say 1866Mhz but when you install it defaults to a slower speed like 1333 or 1600. Then you would go into the BIOS and enable the XMP profile and it would run at 1866Mhz.. But no worries because most memory chip come off the same exact wafers and are just tested for higher speeds and sold for more. Your 1600Mhz ram could be capable of 2133mhz+ but till you test it you will not know for sure. Hope this clears things up a bit for you..

thanks bro for quick response but i am bit skeptical though , if my B85 mobo will hinder me from choosing higher speed
for example if i i go with this stick http://www.ryanscomputers.com/Team-2X8GB-5717 and install it than if it on default run at 1600 mhz than according to your steps if i enable XMP and set DRAM frequency to 2133 mhz will it gonna work out with my B85M gamer mobo , plz clarify this :( btw my mobo's DRAM speed can go up to 2133 mhz at best :(

You sure about that because at https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/B85MGAMER/specifications/ it states that 1600Mhz is the max even with XMP.. But after even more digging think you may have to up the reference clock of the RAM up to 266Mhz in the BIOS to be able to run at over 1600Mhz (for up to 2133Mhz).. So I guess that is the trick is to go into the BIOS and click the OC then raise the DRAM reference speed from 200 to 266..

Due to Intel® chipset limitation, DDR3 1600 MHz and higher memory modules on XMP mode will run at the maximum transfer rate of DDR3 1600 Mhz.

So no, no matter what the board will run at only 1600mhz no higher, you can enable xmp and all it will do is cause the ram to run at 1600mhz but also maximum transfer rate,

Simply put that MOBO will ONLY support up to 1600mhz no matter what.

Officially yes. But if you raise the RAM reference clock from 200 to 266 (which this board does allow I checked HERE at 5:50 it clearly shows the 266 RAM reference clock.. So it is possible to get above 1600Mhz on RAM if you know what to do... So to the OP try this before you give up.. I bet it works..

Then why on earth would they put the 266 strap in the BIOS??
