Hey there again, Sumit!

The SMART status being displayed as BAD is definitely not a good sign. Since your manufacturer's utility is not working, then I'd recommend you to refer to this thread from the community for some third-party testing tools: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/282651-32-best-diagnostic-testing-utility
Give those a try, hopefully, they will give us a more detailed reading on the SMART attributes of the HDD. If your data is not accessible you might also want to consider using data recovery tools at your own risk or turning to a professional data recovery company for assistance.

Welcome to the community, Sumit Hotchandani!

Can you please give us more details about the external HDD? What is the capacity of the drive?
I'd advise you to try using a different USB cable while the HDD is inside its original enclosure. You can also refer to your HDD manufacturer's website and find the diagnostic tool that will help you test its health and SMART status. If the Windows version doesn't work for you, try the DOS version of the software. It will let you perform the tests without booting into any OS.
If you have access to another computer, I'd also try plugging the external drive there and see how it will get recognized.

Keep us posted with the troubleshooting. Hope this helps! :)

It's actually my old laptop's hard disk which i used to connect via usb to my pc. It's a 250 gb hdd and an update that it is being detected but it isn't accessible.
I tried the seagate website and downloaded their recovery tool but it wasn't of much help.
when i had connected the hdd to the MB the SMART status displayed was BAD
Hope this info helps.

I tried using recovery tools like recuva, seagate's official recovery tool and both of them just won't start on my pc and then i just clicked on my drive icon and my pc froze and i had to restart.
I will try them on another machine as soon as i can access one.
I am now seriously considering giving it to a professional data recovery company.
Thanks a lot for your help.

Unfortunately, it seems like your HDD is having severe problems! :( I'd strongly advise you to turn to a professional data recovery company if the data on the drive is very important to you! You already gave the third-party utilities a try, so better not worsen the situation with the hard drive anymore.
I'd also recommend you to turn to your HDD manufacturer's customer support for any advice on the professional data recovery companies that can assist you with this. Retrieving data is rarely a 100 % affair, so be careful with the DIY attempts.

Best of luck! I hope I was helpful.
