All parts bought / salvaged from previous 5 year computer around May 2012

Preferably want to spend less then 1000$ for more modern games.

Wanting to upgrade for performance
Newegg or amazon(prime) work for sites to buy from.

Tower: Don't remember, but has 3 front fans with speed control, 2 top, 2 rear (top and rear are dying, 1 rear dead)
Motherboard: ASUS Sabertooth 990fx
CPU: AMD FX-8150 eight-core
RAM: 2x G-Skill 4gb DDR 3 sticks
GPU: EVGA NVidia 560 TI
Power: OCZ 700w ModXstream
Cooling: older coolermaster, makes grindy noises
HDD: older WD 1TB
SSD: Samsung 240gb
Discdrive: some older ASUS bluray drive. computer does not recognize bluray.

Monitor: Newer ASUS VE278 at 1920x1080
Keyboard: Logitech K120
Mouse: Razer Naga

Speakers: Creative. bought back around 2008.

Reason to upgrade. some games it cant handle anymore at moderate-high settings. some games it just wont run at all without crashing/overheating. I do plan to upgrade my cpu cooling to maybe an H100, and upgrade the ram to 2x 8gb sticks. All my drivers are up to date. What all is a big flag to upgrade? versus just waiting until the next generation or building a new rig all together. The dead fans are a big thing i know, and the cpu fan makes a lovely grinding noise (even after cleaning it out thoroughly) and unless the side panel is off completely, it overheats and shuts off the computer just running the operating system for a while. even faster shut off if i try to run any arcade like game.

What I would do here is clean out the PC real good with compressed air. For upgrade, I would pick up a few replacement fans and a new graphics card and call it good - maybe change your CPU cooling if desired. It does sound a little as though you're a little bored with your current case, you might look into replacing it with one that's a little more appealing to you.

Note about BluRay players: BluRay is a proprietary system, it requires an additional program (none free) to actually play BluRay disks. If you have a BluRay playback program installed and it no longer works, that's an issue that may change my recommendation.
