Hello,

I am getting a gtx970 graphics card as an upgrade but am concerned by old fx4100 cpu will not be up for the job. I can't afford a new mobo and 4790k (£500) at the moment but do want to future proof. How will replacing my FX4100 with a FX8350 work? I can afford £140 for new cpu but would it give me 3-5 years gaming? I would like to be able to play most games coming out over this period. My spec is below and is about 3 years old now...

ASUS M5A99X EVO
FX4100
Some big ass coolermaster cooler (212 EVO I think)
HD6870
250GB SSD
8Gb RAM
700W PSU bronze thermaltake
Windows 7 atm.

Cheers for any comments, oh and can my mobo handle the power requirements of the cpu?

Solution
Seeing as you have a good quality board & cooler go for a 6300 or 8320 & just overclock.
You'll certainly get either of those CPU's up to 4.2ghz easily with your combo & at that point they power a 970 just fine imo.

I think the best upgrade for AMD would be the FX-8320e. Runs much cooler than the FX-8350, and only loses between 5-10% performance in real-world application vs. its much more power-hungry brother. The FX-8320e will certainly perform well for the next few years.

That said, if you wanted to buy a CPU to last for the next 3-5 years I think you would be better served to get a Haswell or Skylake intel i5 CPU (which would also require a motherboard change as well).

Thanks for the responses, I think I will go for an 8320, I'm not fussed about power consumption too much so I'm not sure about the 8320e, sacrificing cpu per for convention, it is also more expensive. As mentioned, I would upgrade to Intel if I could but for £100 I can get another few years rather than a new mobo. There is some question over which Intel socket is going to be used is there not, so I may have to change the mobo again for further upgrades (1155, 2011 etc).

Cheers for the help, not sure this is a question which has a right answer but marked the one more in line with my thinking but all replies confirmed my thinking....
