Screen keeps going black, then going back to normal. GPU/Screen issues? HDMI, doesn't happen with VGA

I have a Sapphire R9 270X and an ASUS VS238H-P 23" Full HD 1920x1080 2ms HDMI DVI-D VGA Back-lit LED Monitor and I'm running this with an HDMI cable. In the past 4 months, it's been occasionally going black, then it goes back to normal. No anomalies on the screen, or weird distorted pictures, image is perfect, but it goes black. For example, happened over 8 times, just trying to watch a short video. It's a random problem. When I'm gaming, this happens as well. Weird.

When I use VGA, this does NOT happen. Problem with VGA, the blacks haven't been looking very good, I'm seeing lines in the black, almost static, vertical lines, very light, but enough that it annoys me. HDMI is perfect, but the screen going black is annoying.

The screen does not turn off, or say no signal. It simply goes black, then turns back on.

So basically, is it a GPU issue or a screen issue?

I had this exact issue with this exact monitor. The HDMI cord was the problem, stopped after switching the cord.
