I am interested in buying the ga-h179n-wifi mini itx board and I am wondering if it is ok to just put 1 stick of 8 gb??? I will want to eventually go with another stick in the future to make it 16 gb but trying to stay on budget at the moment. Is this possible I can do this or no? Thanks

Sorry, the '9' in your original post threw me.

So you're looking at the GA-H170N-WIFI model here: http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=5552#sp

To answer your question, yes you can technically run that board with 1 8GB stick of RAM. For that motherboard you'll need DDR4 2133.

It is highly recommended to buy all the RAM you want to use in the same kit, though if you are truly budget locked you will probably be ok adding another exact stick later.

You can read about why it's better to buy all your RAM from the same pack in this Tom's Article, under section 6: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/ddr-dram-myths,4155.html

No, I'm talking about the mini itx skylake H170 motherboard

All ram should be purchased at the same time in the same retail pack to better guarantee compatibility.

Even identical modules purchased separately can sometimes be in compatible.

You mean the GA-H170N-WiFi: http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=5552#ov

It has two DDR4 slots. You can certainly get 1x8GB now and try to fill in another 8GB later. However, as SR-71 correctly points out - compatibility is only guaranteed for retail packs of two DIMMs. The same brand and model months later could be made of different chips, or have different XMP profiles, and be incompatible with the existing module. At that point you would need to return the second 8GB DIMM and try another, or give up entirely and replace your 1x8GB with a new 2x8GB pack (or perhaps 1x16GB, though all 1 DIMM solutions will lack dual channel that greatly adds to the bandwidth).

2 x DDR4 DIMM sockets supporting up to 32 GB of system memory
* Due to a Windows 32-bit operating system limitation, when more than 4 GB of physical memory is installed, the actual memory size displayed will be less than the size of the physical memory installed.
Dual channel memory architecture
Support for DDR4 2133 MHz memory modules

Support for ECC UDIMM 1Rx8/2Rx8 memory modules (operate in non-ECC mode)
Support for non-ECC UDIMM 1Rx8/2Rx8/1Rx16 memory modules

(Please refer "Memory Support List" for more information.)
