Just bought an MSI GTX 970 Gaming 4G to replace my old 460 (Ya, been a while). Plugged it into an MSI 990XA-GD55 motherboard and hooked it up to an Antec TruePower Trio TP3-650 power supply. I used the 6+2 PCIe connector in the 4 pin slot along with the 6 pin PCIe connector, get a B2 error. I used the 6 pin to 8 pin converter that comes with the video card, get a B2 error. Not sure what is going on here. Is the 970 compatible with the 990 motherboard or is the TP3-650 power supply the culprit here?

If you forced a 6pin or 6+2 pin connector into the motherboard ATX12v connector it will not work and very possibly fry your motherboard.

Throw the adaptor back in the box.
Plug the 4pin ATX connector into the motherboard.
Plug the 6 pin and 6+2=8 pin PCI-E or VGA connectors into the video card.
Plug the 4pin ATX connector into the motherboard.

Sorry, I mistyped should read:

A Power Supply issue

Seems to be a common problem.
You need to update the motherboard bios to recognize the newer card.

I've had the same problem with this card on a different Mobo.

I still have the B2 error even after updating the Mobo.
