**EDIT, I've solved the issue myself to a degree, still asking for additional help at the bottom of this thread though**

Hi there, I successfully built my first PC and it was working completely fine.

5820k and MSI x99 SLI plus has no on board graphics so I was temporarily using my little EVGA 2GB 730 as it has HDMI.

My GPU arrived later and was huge (MSI R9 390)

At the time, I thought the only place I could install it was down near the PSU in PCI_5 slot. I managed to get it working fine, was told by others on this site that even though it was displaying as x8 instead of x16 that it's no biggie.

I tried to turn it on a week later and despite my Midi Keyboard via USB coming on, there was no lights from the PC and it wouldn't turn on.

I opened her up and ensured the CPU cables (25 pin and 2x 8pins) were pushed in all the way.

I took the GPU out of lane 5 to discover it was crushing the pins connected to the cases power on, LEDs etc. (Not the mobo pins luckily)

I took out RAM, put only 1 in. Unplugged SATA to hard drives and DVDRom. Plugged it all back in and she loads up (not the screen, but the mobo and fans)

CPU Fans work, case fans work. Motherboard is working correctly by the looks of it. (No longer not turning on and showing a Red light by the SATA ports area)

I realised there was enough room for my GPU higher up in the middle, and can also fit my 24 bit sound card just above it. So both are in (sound) PCI3 and (GPU) in PCI4. My CPU cooler blocks PCI1.

Using PCI3&4 middle board lanes would also mean my GPU and Sound is not crushing the cases power pins area, nor is it blocking the on board OC, Power and Reset green buttons. It's also left a nice bit of space between itself and the PSU now.

I don't have any need for anymore PCI devices. - what I have noticed, is trying to eject it from PCI5 was tricky and it does feel as though that lane has come slightly looser at the clip end. It's definitely not cracked and putting the card back into it without the 6 & 8 pin power is still lighting up the MSI logo so it's still powered despite feeling loser than the other lanes that are still totally rigid via factory glue.

So with all ram, SATA cables, USB headers, case fan and light plugins plugged back in, and with both the sound card and graphics card safely screwed into land 3 and 4, powering on is a success.

However I am not seeing any post or Windows.

I have checked the HDMI lead is working as I have another work PC hooked to the same monitor and the GT 730 HDMI there to test.

I was worried that it was a driver issue as I have moved GPU to a different lane. (Been to MSI site, AMD site for MOBO and GPU drivers)

So I put GPU back to PCI 5 (had to temporarily squeeze it over the case power pins) and managed to turn on from case buttons despite knowing it's not good to crush those pins.

PCI5 which was where the drivers were installed, is now not displaying despite having power back to everything.

There are no lights on the soundcard despite definitely plugging that back into the correct slot.

I brought the GT 730 back into the build to trouble shoot and I am getting the same issue in PCI lane 4 and 5 (x16) for both the R9 390 and the GT 730.

As I put the HDMI into either graphics card, in either PCI slot, the monitor light goes green, as though it detects HDMI has been plugged into a PC....and then 'no signal'...monitor off...monitor light goes orange.

So two problems I can tell.

1. No onboard graphics, neither GPU is showing POST or Windows.

2. Even if I get it to work with your help, are all drivers setup to PCI5 for the R9390? (Not suitable to go back in there)

Thank you for your time. I'm really sorry to bother you.

I've edited and written in more detail above, thanks for taking the time to help me troubleshoot this issue!

No on board graphics for 5820k and MSI x99 SLI plus.

I can only see that the fans are working, CPU fans working and MSI lights of the R9 390 come on, even after putting it back I n the original PCI5 port I felt may have been loosened a bit upon first removal tonight whilst trouble shooting.

I put it back into PCI5 to a) check were drivers causing the monitor display issue and b) to ensure the port was still receiving the device and lighting the MSI logo up, and that I didn't break port 5 or damage the board initially removing it.

Upon initial inspection prior to unplugging anything but the power cable, it was failing to load up, fans were not coming on, Red light was appearing near the SATA area on the mobo. This issue is no longer there.

Must have been the case feature plugins that we're getting crushed by the GPU that were causing the initial failure to turn on.

Just to confirm a few things.

PC was working fine with little GT730 in a x16 slot to begin with

PC was working fine with the R9 390 despite being at x8 speeds.

crushing the pins which probably caused the issues turning her on today a week later wasn't an issue a week ago as she turned off and on over the course of 2-3 days of setting up, installing programmes etc.

I was able to music, and video edit. Win 7 was working fine.

During the troubleshooting period tonight, I did remove the little watch battery, I did press the CMOS Reset button and I did hold down the power buttons with no plug in.

The battery and everything else is plugged back in accordingly.

Hope this helps.

Came across this page for any build noobs.

http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/261145-31-perform-steps-posting-post-boot-video-problems

For someone without experience, ive checked a lot of these issues without even working from that check list.

Ensuring the RAM was in correctly was something I re ran.

Wow ok, I've gone back to 1 RAM X 8gb. Pushed that bad boy in as far as possible, I've ensured all SATA are hooked up regards hard drives etc, and I have got her loaded via HDMI using the little GT 730.

im going to whip 730 out now, and try to see if I can get magic from the R9 390 with my soundcard as well.

Update: added second stick, still boots from 730 GT.

Added third stick to dim slot 3, no monitor display.

Oh god, problems worse than anticipated.

Last week when I setup, I've was running my ram in dim slots 5678. Assuming we lived in a world where logic prevails and "quad channel" would be 4 RAMS alongside one and other.

Apparently MSI it's 1,3,5,7 which is a bit silly. My machine is struggling to display the monitor based on where the ram sits.
I don't think anything else is shorting the board.

Adding my ram and I can't get back up to 32gb, nor can I get it to quad channel. Not without the monitor not displaying.

I did use MSI Live updater 6 like a noob and someone said this is rubbish and avoid shortly after.

Someone please slap me with some kind knowledge I'm stumped.

Using slots 1234 doesn't work.
1 and 2 works.
123 doesn't work.

1357 doesn't work.
2468 doesn't work.

So I'm paying for quad channel ram and can only use 5678. That's dual RAM not quad FFS. :kaola:

God is anyone reading any of this! I'm guessing it's real early in Europe and really late in the USA.

Ok, good news...

R9390 is comfortably reinstalled and Windows automatically detected the PCI lane change and sorted the drivers out for me. It's still appearing as x8 slot but better than a kick in the teeth.

I'm back to 32gb ram. Using slot 5678. All is as it was, but I've got more room for my GPU fans to breath now and I'm not crushing leads.

The onboard audio has a pin out of place and I think that's the only casualty but I'm using a 24bit soundcard anyway.

I still have my last teething problems...

1. My RAM is CL13 13-15-15-28 appearing as 15-15-15-36. I know this is fixable.

2. I can't use my RAM in QUAD 1,3,5,7...can only get 32gb in DUAL 5678.

CPU Z is stating I've got QUAD channel???. Despite MSI saying it should be in slots 1,3,5,7?

CPU Z also says in SPD slots 5678, I'm on XMP 2.0.

I can see XMP 2132 below with the exact latencies I'm looking for. Alongside XMP 2400 and the JEDEC slower ones.

I'd be hesitant to get more ram until I know for sure she would boot to desktop. Part of me wants 64gb RAM in the future, just to feel like a boss.
