So i decided to build a new system over the summer and got a new PSU (Corsair CX600M Builder), a GTX 750ti, a 6 core AMD FX 6300 and an ASUS M5A78L-M/USB3 motherboard. It worked great for a month or so and then all of a sudden the system completely went off, i unplugged to PSU, plugged it back in and went to turn it on. When i pressed the on button i heard a small pop and could smell electrical smoke. I phoned my sisters boyfriend, who is an IT professional and helped me build my system, i told him about the problem and he said only two things make popping sounds, the PSU and the GPU, so i took the GPU out and it still wouldn't come on, it would spin the fans and light the LEDs for about half a second and then shut off, so he was convinced it was the PSU. i called amazon and got it replaced the next day, i installed it and it did the exact same thing, i'm currently using my old motherboard with the 750ti and it works fine. My sisters boyfriend then concluded that the motherboard was the problem but i don't think it is because when the PSU is connected to the motherboard there is a green light showing it is getting power. Can anyone please help me, thank you.

Solution
if the CPU was busted the PC shouldn't turn on at all as it wouldn't be able to process the requests, and as there was a "pop" i doubt it would be the CPU as there is nothing in the CPU that can pop, but if that pop was the PSU blowing it could of short circuited the motherboard and fried the CPU but without being there to run tests on it its hard to say definitively what the problem is.

The PSU used in your Build the Corsair CX600W is not suppose to be used for gaming, it is a very low end PSU and can really only be used in computer for general browsing of the internet, that "pop" that you head could of possibly been one of the capacitors blowing up, from what you told me your PSU is the most likely cause of this event, you should replace this with something from the brand XFX anything above 500W or you can get the EVGA 550W G2 PSU anything like this are top of the range as far as components go and they come with a fairly low price tag.

ok then that's my bad didn't read that part correctly, it could potentially be the Mobo that is causing the problem, the light that indicates could still turn on as its getting power but on of the channels between the GPU/CPU and Mobo could be faulty causing nothing to be displayed on the screen

im just wondering if it may be the CPU because it does temporarily start booting but then stops, i've tried resetting the cache on the mobo as well and it still made no difference
