Discussion: 10 years of EA-only Star Wars games

If you didn't know, EA stuck a 10 year deal with Disney for exclusive video game rights to the Star Wars franchise back in 2013. And they also recently announced that they'll likely make sequels to Battlfront, as well as release more games as well for console, mobile and PC.

The downsides to this is that we'll never get a Star Wars game for the next decade without micro-transactions, we'll also be a lot more unlikely to get Star Wars games that try new things and most will just rehash already familiar games with a Star Wars skin placed over them.

The upsides to this are that we'll likely have a slightly higher standard of quality for Star Wars games, because quite frankly many many Star Wars games in the past have been garbage. (I had a couple of them as a kid and I remember being unable to make it past the first or second stage in them) And while Battlefront isn't a great game that will define the genre, it's an accurate and faithful representation of what the Star Wars battles like Hoth would actually kind of be like. And it may mean we get a Knights of the Old Republic 3 from Bioware.

But how do you feel about this? I'm still pissed about EA's exclusive NFL license because my favorite Football series was NFL Blitz. (LET ME TACKLE PEOPLE AFTER A TOUCHDOWN)

EA Sports is well known for milking their franchise. Develop one thing, make sure that one thing is good enough, don't improve the lacking other things for absolute years and years.

Dice on the other hand does try new stuff, but is still not very good in my opinion. Hated both BF3 and BF4 overall.

I have not played a Star Wars game in years. The last one was a modded KOTOR II which restored some of the cut content from the release version (2004). I think
I played it back in 2010. It would have been nice if Lucas Arts released KOTOR III, but I think sales of that game was low and it was Lucas Arts own fault because the executives decided to basically cut a lot of content that was still under development so that the game could be released in time for Christmas sales.

My favorite Star Wars games were the X-Wing trilogy, but space combat simulators was a dying genre.

I was looking forward to Star Wars 1313, but we all know what happened to that game. I am not really into playing MMOs so I never played Star Wars Galaxies or SW:TOR. The only MMO I play is Star Trek Online since it primarily focuses on starship combat.

I am not interested at all in SW: Battlefront II. I tried the original game, but I wasn't really impressed by it. From what I remember when you die you simply took control of an NPC. I didn't really like that concept.

Not sure if I would ever play another Star Wars game... But if I do then it will need to have a good single player campaign that can be played offline.
