Which is better between these two for gaming?(help for a noob)

could you give me the pros/cons of each?

yes, I am a noob when it comes to PC componets.

I'm planning to get a new gaming PC or laptop(I need a laptop anyway) on Black Friday and I've learned the basics(the parts) of PCs, but I feel like I don't know enough about memory to make an informed decision yet.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

8gb is more than enough for any game these days. requiring more than that is pretty rare.

really what you're going to be looking at in the difference of ddr3 to 4, in regards to gaming, is negligible. ofcourse the newer ram generation is faster, but this will not impact gaming in any considerable way. you're more likely to see a difference in the entire systems general performance with a newer generation cpu thats paired wit the ddr4

i will tell you that you won't notice a difference in performance between 3 and 4. ddr4 uses higher clock speeds at higher timings and lower voltage. but honestly it doesnt really make your computer noticeably faster.

More memory is always better AND performs better than less.. The speeds today are rather insignificant. DDR 4 isn't just marketing. 4 uses less voltage and runs at a lower temp. and uses less power leading to longevity and $ savings than 3 and has better headroom for future development. We have 32GBs of DDR 4 2400 in the X99 machine here. Which DDR type is platform dependent.

Can't really even compare the two, they are platform independent for all intents and purposes. First decide if going to a DDR3 or DDR4 platform (yes I know either can be run on Skylake - but it really makes no sense to go Skylake and get a DDR3 mobo).

Also 8GB is fine if you want to play most current and older games, if you want to play upcoming games and are building a new rig, 16GB is the way to go, games continue to use more DRAM and make use of it - i.e. both of these call for 16GB
