CPU: i5 6600K
Motherboard: MSI gaming m7

Problem: Built a new pc two months ago, has been working fine. Yesterday cpu speed dropped to 0.8 Ghz. Can't remember doing anything out of ordinary. Bios settings seem to change randomly when booting, sometimes 4.1 Ghz, which it should be, sometimes 0.8 Ghz. Whatever the reading, it will drop to 0.8 in windows. Also windows randomly refuses to boot, forcing to use the boot repair.

-Tried both hardware and software overclock
-Updated the bios
-Cleared CMOS
-Slow boot switch is disabled
-Temperature shows ~29c so it's not throttling

Pretty much clueless at this point.

Perfectly normal, it's saving energy when not needed (if you look in CPU-Z - fre app) at the CPU page in lower left at the multiplier setting it should show 8-36 or something similar with 8 being the 'low' for CPU and 36 being the 'stock' or OC setting you have the CPU up to

Nope, it stays at 0.8 Ghz whether the cpu is stressed or not. Just constantly slow as shit. Also power saving mode is "High Performance"

If your Bios settings are changing randomly, try replacing the small circular battery on the motherboard. If that doesn't help, RMA the motherboard

Noticed my cpu has this problem too, but only after it resumes from sleep. Running something like CB will only stay at 800MHz. Had to restart the system and then the cpu will act normal. So for now I just disable sleep and so far no problems.

Just resumed mine from sleep...and it's back to normal, for the time being. What the hell...

Recently upgraded to windows 10, and now my processor speed is going crazy. The more I stress it, the slower it goes!!!.
Tried all the sensible fixes, nothing works.
Was running happily on windows 7.
What OS are you running?

Also experiencing this problem with the same MSI Gaming M7 Z170A and Intel Core i5 6600K.
Booted up my computer one morning and it was suddenly slow as hell. Core clock is stuck at 800Mhz and a multiplier of x8. Can't seem to find out why.

I hope im not late for this.A little searching indicated that MSI boards comes with Slow mode boot switch to prevent OC damages which inturn limits the cpu to 800mhz

Just have a look at the link below

I've got the same problem with my i5 4690k, its been working fine for about 5-6 months and now on task manager and AI Suite 3 its showing its running at 800 MHz. I have an h115i watercooler on it running at 25C and an newly upgraded MSI RX 470 4Gb and its been working fine since a few days ago. I've played around with lots of the settings and disabling C-states and everything and still no change.
