Hi all,

Myself and a mate have put a SSD into his machine and a Western Digital Green 2TB HD in also, the OS is installed on the SSD and it's working fine (although it takes around 10 minutes when it first starts up to actually get to the login screen which I find weird) but anyways the 2TB HD can be found on the disk management screen, sometimes it lets me initialize it and others not.

At any point I never get further than the error: "the request could not be performed because of an i/o device error"

The Bios doesn't detect the HD but it is listed as online when I do manage to initialize it. The WD lifeguard program give the HD a "Pass" on it's checks for what that's worth. I think the drive is working and the drivers are saying all good, tried uninstalling them and letting them reinstall but no joy, I also changed the port it's connected to on the mobo but I'm not sure what else to do?

Anyone got a suggestion? many thanks!

Hey there again, Killavuulken!

I'd strongly recommend you to check the warranty of the WD Green on our website here: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=ZBKwMq
It should still be covered since it's still brand new! You can simply request an RMA after you check the warranty and contact our customer support for it.

Welcome to the TH community, Killavuulken!

I'm really sorry to hear about your WD Green drive and the I/O device error. :( I'd suggest you to try reseating the connections to the HDD and even try using a different port on the motherboard and preferably a different SATA cable.
Another way to troubleshoot the source of the issue would be to plug the WD Green in another computer and see if you'd be able to initialize and format it there.

Keep me posted! Hope this helps, though!

Hi SuperSoph,

Unfortunately none of the above is helping, looks like the drive is kaput.. brand new for Amazon also (hopefully there is a possibility it can go back after 30 days and I don't even have the packaging -.-). I've ordered another WD Green and I hope that it works..

Turns out in the end that the drive was faulty from the second it arrived in the post, so I followed the instructions on the warranty and received a new one which formatted just under a week later :) Thanks so much.

Sorry I never came back to update this btw, it totally went out of my mind.
