Hello Community..

I was curious how many sticks of RAM I will have to buy for the ASUS Motherboard Maximus VIII Hero? I apologize for my stupid questions but being a first time builder I know nothing...

Thanks!

What all do you plan to do with the rig? I'd suggest a minimum of 2x8GB so you can enable Dual Channel mode (up to a 10-15% performance gain over single channel mode which is what you'd have with a single stick. There is no minimum other than 1 stick, but as suggested above - get all the DRAM in a single package that way they are guaranteed to all play as they have been tested to play before packaging ;)

You can buy only two and without complicating answer, still get the desired results. Just make sure when installing to follow the motherboard instruction on 2 stick-Dual Channel.

It's going to be a page in the Motherboards book. It'll be simple to understand. Usually has pictures.

One last thing to note: the sticks should all be matching (same brand, size, model).

I was going to use it as a gaming computer. Like I said I want to buy the Maximus VIII Hero, the Intel Core I5-6600 processor, and maybe the Kingston HyperX Fury Black 2X8GB 2133MHZ DDR4 Ram... For now that's all I got mapped out, I wondered if you could let me know if this is all compatible? Also wondered if you had a suggested Hard Drive? Thanks!

Can you explain why you need 64gb? I just want to know as everyone is saying that even 16 can be a lot. I know I will never need 64gb but I just wanna see why you want it haha.

You can use is straight as DRAM, can use a big chunk for a RAMdrive (very handy in video editing) or as a spare drive, I do some work on sim software for a contractor, my other rigs all have 32GB and it's nothing to use 24GB and more with VMs and various projects that come in, I've got a couple clients running 128GB. There are many that use lots of DRAM (more than me) and that will continue to grow, what was it, Vista topped at 128GB, Win 7 at 192, Win 8 at I believe 512 and Win 10 up to 2T (and Win server even more, Win Server 2008 was 2T and believe 2012 is 4T. 16GB will prob be the accepted entry level in less than a year (many of us already consider it to be the entry level), even for gaming, people with 8 often run out /low with Games like Star Citizen, and Star Wars Battlefront is also calling for 16GB

For most 16GB will suffice (2x8GB), if you think you'll be getting into rather heavy computing (VMs, heavy video work, etc, you might consider 2x16GB - best to use the 2x if possible for a given amount as it's a little less stress on the MC (memory controller) than 4 sticks

Well that's fun, I actually will be getting into VMs haha for some cyber security work with attacking and stuff.. Do you think to start out for some light work with like 2 VMs, will 16 be good enough and I can upgrade later?

Well I was gonna run Kali Linux in one of them and I think just normal Windows in the other. I am also starting out with windows 7 ultimate because it's free for me because my mother already has a copy of it. (with all the licensing that has not been used)

Yeah I know, I would just end up buying a new set of ram all together. I don't really want to spend a whole ton more money but if some sticks go on a good sale compared to what I already have in my list (G.Skill RipJaws V series ddr4 2666 2x8) then I will probably get it. What are some reccomendations on 32gb of ram? Brand, as well as speed possibly, that's one thing that I never really could figure out when picking ram, I just kinda randomly picked 2666.
