Upon insalling my me corsair rm 850I power supply and booting up my system one of my three hard drives caught fire I immediately uplugged my pc from the wall then removed the hdd and restarted it. It now starts normally could this be my fault for shorting out my hdd against the case or the psu for an improper voltage or is it the fault of the cord I used from my previous power supply any help would be appreciated

Solution
yea, thats most likely a problem. use the cables that came with the unit.

that being said, return the psu for a new one, and obviously dont use the burnt hdd.

To answer both questions yes the setup worked just fine before installing the new psu this one was supposed to be hold rated and supposedly safer for my system. And I used an old power cord with the same plugs for power to my CD drive and three hard drives judst this time one of them, well caught on fire

I put the proper cable on and it all works fine we'll without my fried hdd device obviously I feel dumb for reusing that old cable hopefully someone else on here can learn from my mistake

because it was just involved with a fire? call it bad and swap it out for a new one... unless you like to take chances.

The PSU did not fail. The fire was caused by user error and isn't covered under warranty.

The fire caused by the short-circuit happened on the hard disk drive. That PSU has built-in short-circuit protection.

I certainly would reuse the PSU after load testing it and confirming that it is still running within spec.
