Getting my son a pair of Asus PB287Q 28” 4k displays for Christmas
Much like me he games on one and normally has a Webpage or Netflix on the other screen
Currently he has a single GTX 980, my question is will that card work or shall I grab him a second 980? Or would it be better to bite the bullet and get him a pair of GTX 980ti and sell his 980? or a single Titan (single cards are always less headache then SLI)

Solution
what a lucky kid
It comes down to how much you're willing to pay
980tisli>980sli>980ti>980
but 4k is so expensive right now, is it really worth the money when the next gen of cards will be able to play it much better for a lower price on one card
but if you want it 980 sli will work if you want, or 980ti, your call

Depends on what he plays really. A single GTX980 is going to be able to run pretty much anything at 4K, but you may have to compromise on the settings, or even reduce the resolution.

980Ti SLI is certainly the fastest option you've proposed.

Here is a quick breakdown in SM units (basically comparing them by enabled silicon.
GTX980 16/16 SLI 32/32
GTX980Ti 22/24 SLI 44/48
Titan X 24/24

Puts a 980Ti at 1.375 of a GTX980. So one is a minor improvement, but could be the difference between 30 and 40 FPS at 4K.

I have a pair of 980 and a 4K screen, if I happen to have the game in question I can post some numbers.
