I was wondering about these cpu's. One has a higher clock speed than the other, but I do not know much more.
Which one do you think is best for gaming?

From a similar thread:

"If you read one of the million threads asking a similar question just about a different pair of nearly equivalent models, the main motivation to get Skylake is the updated platform. Performance-wise, they are within 10% clock-for-clock."

As referenced in the quote, you won't see a huge performance difference either way. Between the two at similar prices, go with the i5-6400 and start a newer Skylake build. A Skylake build will afford you more features and upgradeability than a Haswell build at this point.

Some games do require 4 threads, not necessarily 4 cores.
A I3 qualifies with 4 threads.
Most games depend on the performance of a single master thread.
Few can make use of more than 2-3 threads.
This is particularly true for strategy games, mmo and sims.
Not so much for shooters which are more graphics intensive.

Most games coming out will use more and more and hes probably building pc that will last 4-5 years it only makes sense to go for 4 cores.

Will use 4 cores and need 4 cores are two different things.
No game maker wants to limit their market by requiring many cores to run.

It is a moot point.

A i3-6300 for a starter can be upgraded to i5 or i7.
Next year, we might see kaby lake which will run on lga1151.
In 4/5 years, the best we have today will be obsolete.

I would, however, buy a motherboard with a Z170 chipset to begin with.

We all have a budget, so trades need to be made.

I disagree and your logic to upgrade a year later makes no sense why waste the money on i3 now just to spend even more next year to upgrade just get i5 today.
