So i have a linksys router and i just realized,i have NEVER had a modem, throughout all these moves we've had,and i thought you NEED a modem. So please, explain this to me....We have moved 3 times,2 times in an apartment, and 1 time in a house. And all throught those times we have had no modems. We have a vonage adapter so we have vonage phone service, but it isn't a modem, and through all the moves,we have always had the cable from the wall directly into the router, and our internet service providers, starting from first skybeam,to (I don't remember),to xfinity, and now to front range internet. And we had the guys comeout sometimes for each of the isps for a networking issue we had,and they said we don't have a modem anywhere, and the issue wasn't because we didn't have one, just some of the cables were either unplugged or cut.I read online everywhere else and they all say i NEED a modem. But it goes from the wall to the router internet port,to the lan out to the vonage. Thanks :)

Many apartments have a "communal" Internet. There is a central modem under control of the management, and you know you are in a situation like this when the Internet bill is included in the rent.

The house, I have no idea.

Am guessing your are not the "man" of the castle, why not ask him? Maybe he made a deal with the neighbor and...

Thanks man that really helps :) now i've just gotta figure out how the whole house thing was, because when we had skybeam and they came for maintenance they said we didn't have a modem anywhere, and they didn't understand and fixed the issue but it was a cable cut and unplugged. It went from the dish to the router. And the router is e3000.

Thats the same with me (I think). I live in the UK and I use Sky (ISP) and I only have a router that goes straight into the wall. And then my laptop and pc connect to it over wifi. We had one when I was younger but we got rid of it and our internet still worked. I live in a house aswell.
