I use my Seagate to backup everything, I'm a photographer so I have basically my entire portfolio on there. I cannot lose the the stuff that's on that drive. The drive has been working no problem except that in the past two days it I had to eject it without doing it properly. Now it won't turn on. The top of the HD comes off, not that I pull it off often but it detaches from the main board, when it's not attached to the main board the light comes on, but as soon as I plug it back into the main board the light goes off. Is there something that I can do?

Hi there bmccphotography,

Given the fact that the data stored on the drive is really important, I would say that your safest bet for recovering it is to just contact a data recovery company.

As the drive is not powering up, you need to use a different USB cable. If the issue persists, you have two options:
- Contact a data recovery company.
- Some users take the drive out of the enclosure and attach it internally(or externally with SATA to USB adapter) in similar cases. Keep in mind that this may not work in case the drive has proprietary connectors(or the HDD itself has failed).

Cheers,
