I recently got a new rig. I checked that it was 64 bit compatible.
mobo M5A97 R2.0
cpu AMD FX 6300
ram 2x8gb /kingston Fury Memory
gpu XFX R9 270X
psu EVGA 750 Wat...Probs overkill.

Anyway.
I am attempting to install my OS on my new SSD (sandisk Plus)
I can Install 32 bit vista no problem, but when I try to upgrade to 64 bit it always gives me *. It says "Upgrade Disabled" when I boot from dvd rom. in the same screen it will tell me to run the upgrade disk from windows(not from boot)....and it still doesn't work
If I try running it from windows it says run the 64 bit cd from boot.
I'm losing it here.
I've had no issues with the vista key provided to me

Thanks

Upgrade means that you must have a previous, valid OS to Upgrade from.
XP -> Vista. The Vista thing must see an existing XP OS
8->8.1....the Upgrade must see a valid Win 8
'Free' Win 10 - the Upgrade must see a qualifying previous OS. Win 7 or 8.1

The Upgrade is generally cheaper than...

I thank you for your response. For some reason it's working now. I guess the term "upgrade" mixed me up.

So i thought all was solved, but it's not. I skipped entering the prod key at the install menus and let it run its course. Now I have my 30 day trial and I attempted to use the key it says this key is only good for upgrades, not clean installs.

Then that is what you may have. Where did this license key come from?

Ah well....you get what you pay for.
Time to buy an actual, valid OS. Win 7/8.1/10.

It's long past time to dump Vista anyway.

I'm still confused about what upgrade means compared to a clean install.....when it comes to operating systems lol

Yeah. I'm shopping now. I just don't like how every year each OS seems to get more demanding and a bigger dumber look.

The Upgrade is generally cheaper than buying a whole new OS, because you've already given MS some money.
In the case of Win 7/8.1 to Win 10, it is actually 'free', instead of just 'cheaper'. This comes with certain conditions, though.

Clean install means that you can install on a brand new system, with nothing else there. And a valid license key ($$$) to activate it.

And for more demanding? Win 10 actually uses fewer resources than 7.
