So I recently benchmark ed my pc bc I got some new ram. Doing this made me aware that my 18 months old pny 240gb xlr8 ssd's performance had drastically degraded. The read speed is on point the write speed is crap, like 5mbps.

Thanks to a member on here it led me to a link of some things to check out. This led me down a path to windows disk optimization, scheduling ect. I viewed the log and each time the ssd is mentioned, first entry is for retrim, 2nd entry is for defrag. .... this happened 20 times in 18 months. Can I reliably assume this is the reason my ssd is jacked?

Sorry it's 240gb. Ya I've always mainly had 60gbs free space usually more. I just downloaded fallout 4 and that's like 25ish gb so majority of last year I'd say had 80-90 gb free and even less before. This drive hasn't been over used at all. I think Chrystal disk program said I had written a total of 1tb to it since March 2014. What you mean pny like walmart? My pny gtx 970 is great. The drive has 3yr warranty so it's looking like there going to be replacing it but anyways, continue

A quick Google search turns up multiple reports of similar problems, with no solution. Probably time to contact PNY for a RMA.

I don't know about that SSD. but i have a sasung 840 pro and it also has strong perfomance issues.

every few months i need to backup my entire drive, run the samsung magician for a clean reset and reinstall my backup copy. and there it goes, performance is ok again.

I don't know if this is usual in SSD, but i' really dissapointed with the samsung ssd performance.

Have you run the firmware updates for that drive? I have 2 of those, about a year old, and they're doing just fine.
EDIT: I have the EVO, not the Pro.

@solandri I had googled and read most of those links. Really the only thing I haven't done is run memtest on the new ram to see if there's an issue but I'm using gskill ares 2400mhz xmp profile and it gave a great benchmark performance. So I doubt it's bad.

@bolosafari I haven't tried wiping it or anything yet bc it still is working just poorly. I ordered a 256gb samsung 850 pro ..... I really hope I don't have the issue your having with that one aswell

I'm going to wipe it and use some kinda disc tool from pny to see if it recovers somehow but I'm waiting until new ssd arrives.

Might just be a bad drive.
Contact Samsung.
