Having trouble upgrading my RAM.

I am trying to add 4 gigs of RAM to my existing 4 gigs. My PC is 5 years old and prebuilt, and I don't have all the specifications. It is a Gateway DX4840-11c.

Currently I have 2x2GB Kingston DDR3 667Mhz (which, according to a thread I found here, means I have 1333Mhz RAM speed?). I used CPU-Z to find out the specs and then found a RAM that matched it.

These are some screenshots.. And another.

So the stick I went with in the end was the Corsair XMS3 4gig. It had the same timings as my current RAM (9-9-9-24), and the same voltage (1.5v). Since it's the same speed and also DDR3 I figured it would work. From what I read on the internet, even though it was single channel it would work with the others, albeit at a loss of performance.

When I tried putting it in, I got a bluescreen saying "IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL". Here's a picture I took, if that's useful. I'm still not sure what the problem is. I read on these forums that I could try configuring the voltage and speed and making sure it's right, but going into my BIOS, there's no such options. Also, my BIOS is up to date. I also tried booting it up with just the new 4gig stick in, but when I did the computer made a horrible beeping noise so I quickly shut it off.

Can anyone help me? I don't know if the RAM is defective, or maybe just incompatible with my system, or whether it really needed to be dual channel (though I'm hesitant to buy a second stick to test out that theory, incase it really is incompatible.) Are there any tests I can run? I don't really know where to go from here. Maybe I missed something obvious, a lot of this stuff is new to me.

Thanks.

Yeah, unfortunately it seems I already have the latest bios (last updated 2010) and there aren't the options I need on it. Is there a way I can find out why it's incompatible? That way when I order the new ram I can know it'll work. Otherwise it's just trial and error.

Would you recommend buying the same Corsair DDR3 4gig stick as I just bought, and using that? Maybe it's not working because it needs to be dual channel. Then I could remove the old sticks.

What are the chances it's just not compatible with my motherboard? It says it supports DDR-1333 SDRAM, which is what I have in there now.

The CPU is an Intel I3 550. Unfortunately I can't really find much information about what mobo I have. But it might be an H57H-AM2 - at least that's what the DX4840-03c has. I have the DX4840-11c. They seem similar in appearance.

I've been using programs like CPU-Z and Aida64 to find my specs. Motherboard properties, and the h57 chipset.

That would be an 1156 based rig, you could look for a BIOS update, but like with most prebuilts, they have a minimal BIOS and don't put much effort into them as far as updating for additional add ons - they would prefer you buy upgrades from them (of course at grossly inflated prices ;) )

Of course. Well I'm not sure I can upgrade BIOS or get any newer updates. The computer's kind of old (though it still runs well!) Does this mean I won't be able to upgrade ram?

I could try different types and do trial and error. Is that even worth trying? I know I need SDRAM DDR3 1333. It'd just be slightly expensive trial and error. Though I guess I could still use these sticks in future builds - I'm definitely not getting a prebuilt again.

Cool.

It says PC3-10600. I also found another that seems exactly the same except it's PC3-10666. CPU-Z says what I have now is PC3-10700. Is this important? Should I be trying to get PC3-10700?
