Hello all,

I recently had a topic on here about my R9 290x playing up and I had to return it etc, but I can't get the card for that price etc.

So I had a question.

What card would you recommend for this system and price point?

R9 290 Tri X Sapphire( returned card cost £220)
i7 4790k
Asus Z97a
16GB Ram
Windows 10 64bit
1080p monitor

My budget is about £400. ( I have no preference over AMD or Nvidia )

Few specifics, I will be playing on 1080p, though I may be upgrading to 1440 at around Christmas, I play all the normal new release games on PC (Fallout,Siege,ACS,Tomb Raider etc)

Any help would be much appreciated.

Gtx 970 or r9 390 would probably be your best options. The 390 has more vram which will help for 1440p but the gtx 970 generally has better drivers and is only slightly slower. If you wanted to go for gtx 980 for £100 more then that is also a solid choice. I'm pretty much in the same situation as you at the minute and i plan to get the 970 at christmas.

R9 390, it's a fantastic card and beats out the 970 is a lot of games for the same price, and in some cases (rebates) less. It's better prepared for DX12 as well, love mine :) . 390X is a bit overkill for 1440p and it's targeted at 4K, you won't see too much more fps for it in 1440p over the 390.

The budget at most could stretch another £50 quid if I needed too of course, I have a NZXT H440 case and a Corsair CXM 750W.

970 at your budget will do 1080 just fine but... for the same money the r 390x with more vram will do more for the money then the 970 will.. Also drivers are fine just some people have issues installing them or figuring them out.... out of all the kinds of cards I have own only NVidia has driver crash errors to date even on a clean build but I have owned many of NVidia and amd cards hell I still have a old tnt card from NVidia from back in the day as well as a 9800 all in wonder card so if it was my money R390X for sure.

Thanks,

So if it was purely sticking to 1080p I could stay at 970, but with the possibility of going to 1440 the 390x is a better option it seems.
