Hello, how are you?
I am having an issue with a build.
The board is an Asus z170i pro gaming.
CPU is a 6600k, cooler is a noctua nh-d14.
I installed a pair of corsair vengeance lpx ddr4 3000 cl15 dimms.
It is a 16gb kit with 2x8gb modules.

This is the kit:
http://www.corsair.com/en-us/vengeance-lpx-16gb-2x8gb-ddr4-dram-3000mhz-c15-memory-kit-black-cmk16gx4m2b3000c15

With the bios at default, and ram at 2133, the computer works normally.

If I go to the bios and enable the xmp profile to have the ram at 3000, the computer won't boot, and after a couple of tries it got to a screen that says overclock failed, press f1 to enter setup.

I don't understand...
I still haven't tried to OC the CPU.
With the CPU at stock and all other settings at default, the xmp profile doesn't work.

Do I have a faulty board? Or a faulty dimm kit?
Or am I doing something wrong?

Can you please help me out?

Thank you.
Best regards.

What are the timings for the memory?

Did you check the motherboards memory QVL? (ASUS lists it with the board details).

Does the ASUS board have a Mem OK button? You might have some joy there (Sorry, haven't got time to check it our for ya). have a read of your motherboard manual

The timming are CL15-17-17-35 at DDR4 3000.
The board is this:
https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/Z170I-PRO-GAMING/

It says on the specs:
2 x DIMM, Max. 32GB, DDR4 3400(O.C.)/3333(O.C.)/3200(O.C.)/3100(O.C.)/3000(O.C.)/2933(O.C.)/2800(O.C.)/2666(O.C.)/2600(O.C.)/2400(O.C.)/2133 MHz Non-ECC, Un-buffered Memory
Dual Channel Memory Architecture
Supports Intel® Extreme Memory Profile (XMP)
* Hyper DIMM support is subject to the physical characteristics of individual CPUs.
* Refer to www.asus.com for the Memory QVL (Qualified Vendors Lists).

The CPU supports 2133Mhz RAM at stock speed of 3.9Ghz but it should support 3000Mhz overclocked*.

The screen message tells the problem; RAM overclocking failed... probably due to having overclocked it to 3000Mhz at once... you need to overclock it gradually and also overclock the CPU where necessary.. you may most likely need to also increase the CPU voltage slightly when necesary so you'd better read a few Overclocking stickes on the Overclocking forum for more expert advice.
The motherboard manual should also contain related information.

Read some overclocking stickies here:
http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/forum-29.html

*Don't take my word for it.. look for related and specific CPU information. Overclocking experts should answer that specific information for you, so if you feel it necessary, take your questions to that forum.

Improve system stability.

Will flash it and give it a try.

Also, the ram is 15-17-17-35 at 3000.
If I cannot run 3000, how much can I improve the timings while lowering the speed?
Can it run 10-12-12-20 at 2133?

Cheers!

it surely will not run 10 without failures. You are not the only one with Problems running 3000 Ram. I heard of many that 2666 is actually the fastest that they can run. Just try going down from 3000, maybe 2800 works. Just try it!

I had the same problem with a G.Skill ddr4-2800 kit. After a long search on the net I found that I had to raise the voltage on the ram by .1v. After I'd did that the xmp profile worked. Just go slow on the voltage increase....you can find the option in the advanced menu.

I have the same mboard.

Did you ever get this worked out? I just bought that same mother board and paired it with i5 6600k with G.SKILL TridentZ Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 3000 (PC4 24000) Intel Z170 Platform / Intel X99 Platform Desktop Memory Model F4-3000C15D-16GTZB.

Here it is March 2016 and there have been many new bios, im using the latest 1204 and im still having this same trouble. I cannot boot with XMP profiles activated.

Do you have any OC on the 6600K, give it a try. The CPU and it's MC have to be strong enough or running strong enough to carry the freq of the DRAM. And not all 6600K are equal, mine can carry 3200 but have seen some that barely get by with 2400/2666 at stock

Thanks for your help Tradesman, after reading your articles i had some success. I enabled xmp profiles set the cpu to a Conservative 45 but bumped the ram back down manually to just above the stock speeds then added voltage from 1.35 up to 1.36 and had successful boots one at a time all the way up to 3000. Set Aida 64 to test the ram for a few hours and was still running in the morning.

So here is where i am at now when i first purchased these upgrades I bought f4-3000c14d-16gvk ram its a 2 stick set of 8 gigs each with timings of 14.14.14.34@1.35 as it turned out this ram is not included at gskill in the qvl for the Asus z170 pro gaming mother board, but it is listed for most of the other z170 boards like the rog and even the Deluxe. I really like this ram because it has really fast timings. So right now i have success with 15.15.15.35 and I tried setting the first number down from 15 to 14 i could not get a successful boot, so my question is do you think we can change some settings to get the 14.14.14.34 timings working? I dont know where to begin.

Until Asus get's the BIOS upgraded you may have to do these manually ( the sticks with the 14 CL are a fairly new release, so may want to add about + 0.06 to the, believe it's either DDRVTT or CPUVTT voltage on your mobo. I Imagine Asus will get the upgrades into the next BIOS or two updates.

I'm running a GSkill F4-3000C15D-16GTZB Trident Z Kit with an i5-6600k on an Asus Z170-K with XMP @3000 with no trouble - instant boot. CPU-Multi is at 43, with no further changes on any related options. Prime95 tested for 30 minutes so far. Latest Bios ~April 2016.

Im running with the exact same rams/motherboard/cpu and i cant use more than 1 stick at a time. Wont even boot with 2...and it seems tons of people have the same issue. Is really sad :(
