Hello, I have a 5 year old dell studio xps 8100 that I am trying to do a poor mans upgrade on. I'll be installing new 8gb ram because the original one has gone bad and I was thinking about upgrading the graphic card as well. It is an old machine so I'm not looking for anything my cpu can''t handle. The machine currently has a "core i5 650 @3.2ghz 2 cores" with a "AMD Radeon HD 5670" gpu. What would be recommended to improve gaming performance? I mainly play wow and blizzard games. As is it runs wow on mid~high mode with 45ish fps, sometimes dipping to 25.

you just have to do some homework on what cards you want to use with that dell

like this stuff to start??

https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/894513/geforce-900-series/gtx-970-compatibility-dell-xps-8100/

go to dell like here and see what's up look at threads like this maybe ??

I'd like to but I just donlt know where to Start. So do you know a GPU that would work with the cpu I have without bottlenecking it?

I personly never recommend upgrading any prebuilt - I see it as there only guaranteed to work as is as you bought it out of its box from dell

all I can say is go to dell and your model specs and se what dell has for there approved upgrade list for it ??

then you down to you buy you try and hope it don't make you cry ? these days its getting hard enough to get stuff to work on our custom builds

I guess you start like I did to got that info I gave to you . I googled '' xps 8100 gtx 970 '' and started to see what popped up

you need to look for your self and not go by guys telling you ''ya it will work'' then you find it don't and your out 200 bucks or what ever on a card you cant use

maybe send this guy [mndial2] wanting a gtx 950 in his xps 8100 a private message and see if he will answer you on if he got that card and if it worked ??

http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-2832899/xps-8100-upgrade-gpu-nvidia-gtx-950.html

and the guy from here as well ?

http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-2534884/dell-xps-8100-gtx-960-compatibility.html

but you see what I mean about getting told yes but you see from the dell support forums they don't get any answer ???

Well that's just it. I don't know what would be a good card what wouldn't bottleneck a 5year old cpu and still give thr build
Some performance boost. You bring up gtx 970 nit thats a 4gb ddr5 graphic card right? Im no expert but i'm sure my processor clwpild not be able to optimize the gpu.

what I'm trying to say is you need to first find out what cards will work in your dell that's the trick

one link from deell was on a card they said the evga did not work but the msi did ?? same cards but maybe something in the evga cards bios did not work with the motherboards bios ??

why I say I never recommend upgrading a prebuilt - too many things to be uncertain about

heres what I post to prebuilt guys

some models of store bought computers [dell.hp,acer,ect..] may come with a ''locked or fixed'' bios and may not allow you to change certain hardware as a video card.. this is done to protect them from undue warranty claims and refunds .this is not done to hurt you but to protect them. you really need to see if that upgrade has been proven to work in your model first before you invest money in it .. there are a lot of these threads here at toms to look at some models will allow upgrades and some dont.. and a lot of guys here say ya ya ya when is really no no no...it would be sad you spent $200 on a card that wount post after you installed it as most find out. then get told its your psu and you spend more and end up right back where you are now, but its up to you good luck..

you got to know the the boards in these computers are not like the ones we use to do custom builds witch are open to upgrading with in the boards compatibly . the bios is custom made for there design and just for the parts they authorize to be used on there computers there only guaranteed to work as is out of the box as you bought it ,..

also these boards do not have to meet atx standards and there pci-e slot power may not do the required 75w needed for most higher end cards and can be limited to say 45 or 60w that is all thats needed with the low end factory oem cards that it may of shipped with

you buy something stick it in and if it works out great if not oh well better luck next time

see what the dell guy said here

''He did not say what brand or model worked.

This Model may work but you would have to test to make sure.

all there doing here is pulling at straws
