Should I get an Intel i7 if I want to play games at max settings?

I'm planning my first build and want to know which CPU to get to play games at max settings. I have an i7 870 2.93 GHz right now in my current PC but this is an older PC. Could I pull it from this PC and incorporate it into my new build or should I buy a new CPU and if I should, which one?

I recommend buying a new CPU. for gaming there is little difference between an i5 and an i7. If you can afford the i7 definitely get it, as it will preform well in other areas but the an i5 will do a good job at gaming. for an i5 i would recommend a ( Intel core i5 4690 ) or the K version if you intend on overclocking it.
