Hi,
I'm planning to buy a new laptop (mostly Thinkpad) for personal use. I will be typically using this to run multiple VMs with Bigdata, Databases (oracle, SQL server), datawarehoue tools. I've to choose either a Skylake Quad-core based workstation laptop or Haswell Quad-core workstation laptop.

I'm in dilemma to choose between Haswell i7-4710MQ vs I7-4930MX vs Skylake i7-6920HQ vs E3-1505M v5 processors. (these options are available to select in laptop models)

It looks like Haswell based Thinkpad W541 will be cheaper than the to be released skylake based Thinkpad P50. Do you think will there be any significant gain in performance wise between Haswell and Skylake. From the articles I've seen there seems to not much gain for skylake , except battery gain. I don't need ECC memory of Skylake mobile Xeon. It looks like there's no significant gain for DDR4 RAM than DDR3L.

Can I go with Haswell based laptop as it is less expensive than skylake based laptop here in US?

Appreciate your help in choosing the laptop with any of below processors :
Haswell i7-4710MQ vs Haswell I7-4930MX vs Skylake i7-6920HQ vs Skylake E3-1505M v5

Thanks a lot.

Shaun

SKylake will gtive you a 5-15% boost clock for clock depending on the use (7% better average performance). Maybe you will notice the 4710 runs a little slower than the others, really the difference is negligible. if the haswell is $150 cheaper Id get a haswell, if the difference is less Id be on the fence.
