Looking for advice for updating/upgrading my i5-3570K system

Hi! I have an aging system that I'm considering updating. I built this in mid-2012, and it's been a VERY reliable system for me (been building every 3-4 years or so since early 2000's). This rig has been very suitable for my needs in the last few years. And I might consider keeping it as-is for a while longer, but I thought with potential holiday deals coming up and all, now might be a good time to consider things.

Current setup:

  • ■ CPU: Intel i5-3570K (non-OC) cooled with Cooler Master Hyper 212+
    ■ Mobo: ASRock Z77 Extreme6 LGA 1155
    ■ RAM: G.Skill Ripjaws DDR3 1600 (2 x 4 GB)
    ■ Gfx: Radeon HD 7850 2GB
    ■ PSU: OCZ SleathXStream OCZ600SXS 600W
    ■ SSD: Samsung 850 EVO 250GB SSD (just got this recently to replace a smaller SSD)
    ■ HDD: Western Digital Black WD1002FAEX 1TB
    ■ OS: Win 7 64bit

I don't play games much these days, but when I do, I'd like to enjoy decent performance. Doesn't have to be with everything maxed out, but I'd like it better than mediocre/average Gfx and performance. For example, with the setup above I was able to play Skyrim with almost maxed settings at 1680 x 1050, and was quite pleased with it.

Besides that, I do some home music recording from time to time (nothing big but some guitar multi track recording and whatnot). I occasionally run VirtualBox with a VM for some work-related (software development) stuff, but not all the time.

Basically my PC needs to be a well-rounded rig for everyday stuff and a relatively power-efficient box. Gaming can be considered "upper-intermediate" level gaming. Not really interested in OC much these days.

Was considering updating just some components (maybe CPU and Gfx) just to give it some boost, but it looks like LGA1055 socket only supports up through 3rd gen Intel CPUs, and since I'm already on 3570K, I don't know that it makes sense upgrading to a "slightly" newer CPU (even if to an i7 of same gen). But going to a newer gen would mean a new Mobo too, and with that, probably a lot of other new stuff. Which might be OK to do.

What do you all think? Any ideas? What would you do? What partial upgrades would you do? more complete upgrade?

Thanks!

For a simple upgrade, I would tend to just upgrade the graphics card.

That system is a solid mid range gaming system right now. The video card performs well in DX9 games, but is not so good in recent DX11 games. If you upgraded your video card to a Radeon R9 380, you would get a 60% increase in DX11 titles and (worst case) a 10% increase in DX9 titles.

Plus, the R9 380 is only about $200 - so it won't break the bank with that upgrade. And you would be sticking with the same series of video cards (AMD), so the driver would just have to be reinstalled. When you change between AMD and NVIDIA you have to run a driver cleaner to make sure everything still works okay.

The R9 380 can use up to 60 watts more power when gaming over a Radeon HD 7850, though. So I hope that the room you run it in is well ventilated :)
