How to add 5.25" floppy drive to my Win98SE machine?

Hi all.

I have a machine running Windows 98 SE, not sure on the mobo make (it's a gateway of some kind) but I know it has a FDD connector on it. I have two floppy drives, one 3.5" and one 5.25". The 3.5" is a generic model which came in the system. It runs fine off the included FDD cable. The 5.25" is a Teac FD-55GFR which I want to use for some older 1.2MB disks I found. I also have a new cable which has hook-ups for two FDDs (allowing mix and match of 3.5 and 5.25 there) so I can hook up both drives. I have now added this cable to the machine and hooked up both FDDs, and am supplying power to both drives as well. Both drives power on fine, but I cannot seem to get a response from either drive. Under My Computer, I see only A: drive listed for floppies, and when I attempt to access it I immediately get a 'device not ready' message. Nothing changes if I add a floppy to the 3.5" and try again, but if I insert a disk into the 5.25" and try again, it waits about 10 seconds before returning the same message.

I'm thinking from this that it's only reading the 5.25" and that the hardwares need to be added through a more detailed process than simply adding them to the machine. Can any Win9x gurus impart their wisdom?

I have tried also switching the bios diskette A: drive to be 1.2MB 5.25" drive, but this has not changed the results I was receiving before.

Apparently I might only be able to do one drive at a time, if so then I guess I will deal with it but I'd prefer to have both if possible.

Ah yes, forgot to mention it does have the twist in it before both drive connectors. Also (maybe) relevant, the jumper switch (or I think that's what it is) is on DS1 for the 5" drive, the 3" drive has no jumper switches as far as I can tell.

I tried also using only one drive (the 5" drive) and setting BIOS to look for a 1.2MB 5" dirve. Still get the same 'device not ready' error.

As for the 'no dual drives post-DOS', I would be able to use both simultaneously in DOS but could only use one or the other in Windows 98? Not even if I uninstalled the OS, installed MS-DOS, and then installed Win98 on top of it? Just asking naively here, my familiarity with DOS starts and ends at DOSBox, but putting it out there anyway.

Manual for your 5.25" drive: http://deramp.com/downloads/floppy_drives/teac/Teac%20FD-55GFR%201.2MB%20floppy.pdf

Sounds like you don't have it jumpered correctly. Also, the twist should only occur after the first (middle) connector, and before the end. There should only be one twist, never two. The end with the twist is never connected to the motherboard.

Windows 9x can use 2 floppies only if the BIOS supports 2.

Ah yes, you're right. On second inspection, only the last connector has the twist. The correct end (the non-twisted end of the cable) is plugged into the motherboard, and the twisted end is plugged into the FDD.

On that note, I noticed that I was only using the FDD connector which was untwisted on the 5". When I swapped it for the twisted plug, the drive started working immediately!

I'd still like to use my 3" drive as well, would it be possible to flash a new BIOS which supported two FDDs? My current one only shows one option for FDDs even when two are plugged into the mobo.

Only if the manufacturer made available a BIOS update that supported more than one floppy. Doubtful that ever happened though. You'd have to check the Gateway website. Although, if it's old enough to be running Windows 9x there may no longer be anything available from Gateway.

Since the floppy drive does work, I'm going to mark this question as answered. The lesson learned is that to make your 5" floppy drive work on Windows 98, make sure that you have plugged it correctly (if your BIOS is only configured for one FDD then make sure that the 'main' connector is used, check for a twisted cable below the connector) and that you have configured your BIOS to look for the right drive type (in my case, 1.2MB 5 1/4").

I will create a new question for my other issue of connecting two floppies. Thanks for everyone who helped out.
