AMD A10-6800K overheating

Hi guys,

I purchased my PC about 18 months ago. Recently it has been randomly powering off when playing CSgo but didn't appear to be doing so when playing WoW. After it would power off I would just simply turn it back on and it would work fine. This started off happening about once a week and now happens almost every CSgo competitive game I play. I figured the CPU heat sink might need to be applied with thermal paste but I decided to go out and buy a COOLMASTER Nepton 240M. The first CSgo game I played after installing the new cooler caused my PC to turn off. I turned it back on and then shortly after booting to Windows it turned off again. After leaving the PC powered off for a few minutes I checked my CPU temperature in BIOS at it was running at 80-90 degrees Celsius.I downloaded HWMonitor. My CPU appears to be idling at around 50 degrees Celsius; if I open 10 chrome tabs it will just to 80-105 degrees.

Has anyone experienced the same issue and might know if something else needs to be replaced?

CPU: AMD 10-6800K
Motherboard: Gigabyte FM2 F2A75M-D3H
PSU: ENERMAX NAXN ENM750AWT
GPU: ATI XFX 7870 2GB

I guess I'll try reinstalling again.

I just played a game of CSgo and the temperature hit 120 degrees Celsius.

Should my PC even be able to run if it was that hot?

I don´t think so, It should shutdown itself at that temp.

Thanks for your response. I've downloaded and installed AMD Overdrive but I'm not sure what I should be aiming for. With this browser window, Skype, and an email client open my thermal margin is 50-65 degrees Celsius. Does this seem acceptable?

I also downloaded HWiNFO and it indicates that my Core temp is about 30-40 but my socket is still as high when I originally posted.

My PC has stopped powering off after reapplying the cooler to the socket.. My PC's performance has been great but my temps just haven't improved at all; should I be worried about this?

What are the thermal margins while stress testing the CPU with Prime95 Small FFTs? If they are at least 10°C then you don't have an issue. HWiNFO can't accurately read the temperature of an AMD APU or CPU (neither could AMD and that's why they use the far more accurate thermal margins).

Hey, when running Prime95 Small FFTs the thermal margin is dropping to as low as 2.5, averaging around 6.6. As well, I've found that my PC won't turn off in CSgo if I have the sides of my case off.

The thermal margin I mentioned earlier were with the sides of the case off and the PC had only been powered on for about 5-10 minutes, and all other temps are fine.

Do you think its possible that CPU is faulty or worn?

The CPU is fine, the issue is elsewhere. What are the thermal margins after 15 minutes with the case covers on? Leave them off only if you normally don't install the covers, but most cases are designed to be used with covers. Is the Nepton 240M pump working at full speed, i.e., is it connected to the PSU and not a motherboard fan header that doesn't make it run at full speed?

Thanks for your response.

I'll check the thermal margins after running for 15 minutes when I get home from work. I have the pump and radiator fans connected to the motherboard at the moment, so I'll swap them to the PSU and let you know.

My PSU doesn't have a pinned connector, I might have to try and find a 4 pin to fan connector on eBay.

If my computer was over heating to the point that it was shutting down, I surely would notice a decrease in performance right?

So it appears that I messed up pretty bad. I pulled off the water pump from the CPU to reapply thermal paste and found that I left a plastic film on there. I honestly have no idea how my PC still works.

Thermal Margin under load from small FFT in Prime95 is now 45 degrees Celsius.

Thanks for your help guys and I'm sorry for wasting your time :)
