Well, I have just upgraded my GPU to an MSI 980ti and bought a new 1440p g-sync monitor so I could max out the latest games. This has been a short lived reality...

PC Specs...
CPU - I7 4770 @ 4.3Ghz
Motherboard - Asus Sabertooth Z87
RAM - 16GB Kingston HyperX Beast 2400Mhz
GPU - Nvidia MSI 980ti 6GB Twin Frozr OC
Case - Corsair Obsidian 750D
Storage - Samsung 250GB SSD and 3x 1TB WD Caviar Black
PSU - Corsair CX750M
Display - Asus PG279Q ROG Swift 27" ISP 1440p @ 165Hz
Cooling - Corsair H80
Mouse - Logitech G9X
Operating System - Win 10 Pro

I have set GTA V to max settings, which I should be able to do given my PC's specs, right?

When I had first installed my new GPU I and set the settings to max on GTA V I managed to play it for about 20 mins with no problems, then my computer just crashed, no blue screen, just rebooted without any warning. I have lowered the settings on GTA V and I still get the same problem, but now it crashes as soon as it hits any gameplay.

I tried to run a GPU stress test 'Valley Benchmark' and ran it on Ultra HD setting which was fine for a while then that made my PC crash too.

I have tried to look at event logs but I am a bit confused by the entries.

Also my CPU is not overheating (around 50 °C under heavy load) nor is my GPU (80°C max while under heavy load)

So this leads me to believe that it is not GTA V that is the problem but rather my GPU maybe? Can someone please advise as to what could be going on?

I want to make sure it is the GPU that is the problem before I RMA it.

Let me know any other information you may need to help me out.

And as always - you guys rock, so thank you in advance.

Hi,

Yeah I have done that. I have Geforce Experience installed, it updated the drivers last night actually. On a side note I forgot to add that I had just installed windows 10 just after I installed the new GPU if that matters at all?

Just looked where you told me to and it doesn't mention anything about a graphics driver update, but I have manually updated the drivers for my GPU so that shouldn't matter should it?

I've previously had issues with Windows 10 Windows Update over-writing my manually updated drivers and causing issues. It was something to check.

Edit: If it's showing "No Updates have been installed yet", make sure the Windows Update service is running. If it's disabled, it won't show any updates have been installed.

yeah the windows updates are running and I have the latest drives. I will try putting my old GPU back in to see what happens as Gracodana suggested.

I have this exact same problem.

pg279q
evga titan x
gigabyte 980ti
win 10 pro
asus motherboard

my computer does the exact same thing.

i thought it was the gpu, the titan x. so i bought a 980ti. and it does the exact same thing, so it can't be the gpu.

leads me to think it's the power supply, I have one coming in on wed.

also, i can play league of legends for some reason. but anything else crashes it.

Curious things, if i use a smaller gpu, the computer doesn't crash, had some old gpu's and it worked fine with those, at lower resolutions.

Something, most likely your BIOS, is limiting the temp your GPU can go to. I had the same issue, when my card hit 80 degrees the whole system crashed. Just turn that up and you should be fine. 80 is nothing for a gpu.

doesn't seem to be the temp.

im not overclocking the card, and I was checking the temp last time it crashed and it wasn't even in the 70's.

I went into the bios and found nothing that would affect my gpu temp.

My advice to you is go ahead with the PSU change if you have something crappy like I did 'Corsair CX750M' and also go back to windows 8.1 if you can. After I swapped my PSU my crashing problem got a bit better, then it got worse and was crashing from even watching a youtube video. Since switching back to win 8.1 I have had no problems AT ALL. Hope this helps you and good luck, my friend.

I can't go back to 8.1, i clean installed win 10 pro. from a purchased version of the software, I didn't upgrade.

It may very well be win 10, but I think it's got to do with the overcharge protection on my psu.

I am not giving up, i shall play in 165hz glorious g sync again.

but until then im sad.

Yes Sir,

Checked the ram both by software, and by physically removing sticks and testing them individually using different sockets and configurations.

My new PSU arrives tomorrow. hope this fixes it, otherwise i suspect I have a bad MB

Yes, I was.

Fortunately, I installed the new power supply and it's working like a charm!
