Hi Everyone

I am looking into doing build a AMD gaming machine with my son for xmas, and just wanting to ensure I have everything we need to build the machine and I am not missing anything and everything is compatible. Also any general advice or tips, We already have a monitor and keyboard and mouse.

Please see the image below for a list of parts

Initial thoughts - some tools, a magnet and some high quality thermal paste to protect that 8320. A hard disk would be better than transferring one from an older machine, particularly one built around the time of the Thai floods.

What were you thinkng of for an operating system and anti-virus/malware utilities?

Thank you so much, I was assuming that thermal paste would come with the cpu but if that's not the case I will grab some,

Harddrive, was just going to get a cheap Seagate Barracuda 1TB ST1000DM003 $75.

I was going to use my copy of windows 7 on our unused pc and this tutorial to install the product key

I've bought hundreds of CPUs but none has ever included thermal paste. Make sure it's a good quality product - the cheapest should stay on the shelf.

You could follow that tutorial to change the Product Key but it's easier to go into Control Panel>System and scroll down to the bottom where you'll see a link to Change Product key - in spite of there not being one to change.

Enter the key you have and once connected to the net, it will try to activate it. Expect it to fail though. It may invite you to go through the telephone activation line where Diana Muldour will lead you through the process.

If that fails, you will need to buy a fresh copy just to get a valid key.

Why would you spend the money for an AMD rig? AMD FX is about as obsolete as it gets, especially since AMD has a brand new platform that's supposed to hit shelves sometime around next March - April There's simply no reason to this late in the game. The FX processors are a four year old CPU on a 10 year old platform. Intel Sky Lake or even Haswell would be a much wiser investment if you're spending over $750 on a rig.

This is what you should be spending money on:
