As the title states, recently built a new computer and I started getting nothing but problems after installing the drivers from the disk and operating system(Windows 7 Ultimate). I ran sfc /scannow and it reports: "Windows resource protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them." Since finishing this build I've been unable to run just Fallout 4. Others I can, virus application won't work, can't use download resource applications on my usbs as it states: "This version of this file is not compatible with the version of Windows you are running. Check your computer's system information to see whether you need a 32-bit or 64-bit version of the program and contact the publisher." I tried to repair the operating system but it said it was incompatible so I just upgraded and the problem persist. I didn't have this problem on my last build using the same windows 7 disk.

- Windows 7 Ultimate
- Z97 Gaming 5 (MS-7917) Mobo
- GTX 970 (Updated)
- i5 4690

Update: In the event window logs my error for fallout 4 reads "Windows cannot access the file for one of the following reasons: there is a problem with the network connection, the disk that the file is stored on, or the storage drivers installed on this computer; or the disk is missing. Windows closed the program Fallout 4 because of this error." Which to me means I might just have a faulty hard drive. I've checked the game's integrity and re-downloaded it to no avail. The same error is displayed for Windows System Assessment Tool.

Ok, if you're prepared to, I would start again with a clean install.

Don't install any drivers that came on disks (Windows Update will do the majority for you on Windows 7). You will need a LAN/Wifi driver (depending on what you're using). I would download that first & put it on a USB drive and install.

Let Windows Update do it's thing....reboot when required etc.

Then, and only then, head on over to the manufacturer's websites & ensure all the drivers that are installed are up to date.

On the face of it, I think you ended up with 32bit drivers rather than 64bit, but to rule out anything else, I would suggest what I've outlined above.

Alright; last night, I wiped my hard drive with dban. Installed windows 7 this morning, all was good. Installed the chipset and lan driver from the manufacturer. Still good, and now I'm actually able to use windows update. I started to install updates, then after it restarted after the first 30 something updates I got the "desktop window manager has stopped working." And now as before I can't use certain windows features like windows index. However this time I can actually use windows update still so I'll continue updating and see if that fixes it.

hmmmm, strange.

Could be your BIOS.....do you know if you're running the latest version? If not, I would stop all updates for now (no sense wasting time) and update the BIOS first. Then go back to Windows Update and see if the problem occurs.

Ok, so I installed two more updates. One being service package 1, which I believe might have fixed it. Everything is working properly. Kind of scared to start adding the drivers now. Guess I'll keep updating windows then create a restore point. As for the bios, I updated it before the hard drive wipe. It should still be updated right?

Oh, you were installing the original W7? SP1 was some major improvements, so I'm not surprised it's looking better. Make sure you have updated your BIOS too though, that can cause the "Desktop window manager has stopped working" message also!
