I want to use an old computer as a router:

For my wireless devices instead of buying a wireless NIC I want to use my old router with dhcp disabled (connected via a switch)

Is this possible to do with pfsense or something similar? Can the wireless functionality of the router be controlled by the PC or will a wireless NIC be required?

Solution
You want to run the wireless router as a AP. You would configure it like you always do ignoring that your "router" is actually a PC.

pfsense is a firewall load but it also have most router features. There are other linux router images but I would go with pfsense to start it tends to have better support.

To make things simpler I would use a dual nic pc. You can add a second ethernet port via pci card. If you try to use a single port you will need a managed switch so you can use vlans to let a single port simulate the lan and wan ports.
