Will Pascal require 2016 hardware?

Hello, since black friday/cyber monday is coming I wanted to pick up some parts for a cheaper price. I am waiting for the Pascal GPU, but I heard that it will need some new hardware such as a new motherboard. Is this true?

Solution

For the next while, NvLink is going to be a server thing. There is no need for 8 GPU's for gaming, but when they are used for nuclear simulation, it's handy and usually they don't use desktop GPU's, they use specialized devices like Tesla.

"IBM plans to add NVLink to select Power microprocessors for supercomputers and the technology will be extremely useful for high-performance servers powered by Nvidia Tesla accelerators."

Thank you for the help :D

I don't know why people expect nvidia will use Nvlink on consumer card when Nvidia specifically mention that only tesla going to use nvlink while quadro and geforce will keep using PCIE standards. Nvlink was created to address PCIE weakness in HPC application. The only one possible Nvlink to be use on tegular consumer card probably improving nvidia SLI tech.

Will there still be consumer benefits to the card? Because I am willing to wait for the new card, but if there isnt going to be a huge difference I might as well upgrade now.

Dunno till it comes out and gets benchmarked. They can rave about it all they want and put out numbers, but until they produce cards, no one knows. They are supposed to use HBM2 memory for large density in small packages. A card the size of a 750ti and power greater than a titan with 16GB VRAM could be possible.

Do you know when they will release benchmarks approximately? I know the card is coming out in the first half of '16, but will they most likely be released close to the release date or a bit sooner?

Can't say when. Because we don't know when nvidia will launch their next series. But when they were close to launch we will start hearing rumors. Probably around three months or so before actual launch. So far we hear nothing much about Pascal yet. Only heard about tape out in june or july.

It looks like they are using NVLink on the consumer card after all.
