hey so i went ahead and tried to do a build for the first time, put it all together and i get nothin on the screen. the fans and the power lights go on and there's a little light goes on in the front of the videocard but the monitor stays dead. tried a different monitor, same result. also the fans on the videocard stop after a few seconds. i tried everything on the checklist, breadboarding got me nowhere, no beep codes from the speaker. i figure it's either the motherboard or the psu or maybe the videocard but no idea how to determine which is which. any ideas?

specs:

CS650M Power Supply Unit

Hyper 212 EVO Cooling Fan

Internal SATA 14x Super Multi Blu-ray Disc Rewriter

Strix GeForce GTX 970 Graphics Card

2TB Desktop Everyday 3.5" Hard Drive

250GB 850 Evo 2.5" SATA III Solid State Drive

Ballistix Sport 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR3 PC3-12800 Memory Modul

Z97 PC MATE Motherboard

Core i7-4790K 4 GHz Processor

Phantom Full-Sized Tower (White)

edit: ok things have improved drastically to the point where i can boot the computer and get to the bios screen but only as long as the graphics card isn't installed. i updated the bios to the current version with no effect. not sure if i should return swap the videocard or if it's a compatibility issue.
hopefully final edit: ok nobody told me that the monitor was supposed to be plugged into the graphics card not the motherboard lol. gimme a break, i haven't gotten a new computer in six years and the manual was no help. i needed an adapter for my old d sub connector and once i got that i was good to go. thx to everyone for your help

tried that, even took the motherboard out of the case when i did it. no beeps, cpu fan ran fine.

could it be something to do with how the monitor is connected? my monitor has an old d sub connector that plugs into the motherboard. but the graphics card manual says i need to plug the monitor signal cable directly into the videocard port. could that be the problem and i just need to buy an adapter for my monitor cable?

omg hey so i just took out the videocard and tried booting again and SOMETHING HAPPENED! i got the motherboard logo on the screen and then it said "reboot and select proper Boot device or Insert Boot Media in selected boot device and press a key". that means it's not the motherboard or the CPU right?

ok i unplugged everything but the cpu fan, the speaker and the power switches and now i got this on the screen

"EFI Shell version 2.31 [4.655]
Current running mode 1.1.2
map: Cannot find required map name.

Press ESC in 1 seconds to skip startup.nsh, any other key to continue.
Shell>_"

as i posted before when you pulled the gpu you got the mb to post. the boot device message was the mb trying to boot from a drive and found no os. when you get the mb to post again hit the del or esc key go into the bios on the main page is the bios rev. if it below the a4 that i posted then from another pc download and unzip the newest bios file to a usb stick. reboot the new pc with the usb stick plugged in. in msi main bios screen the lower right side is a tab to go into the bios updater. run the bios updater and update the bios. when done and the newest bios file is on the mb..power off and see if the mb will now post from the gpu.

ok sorry i didn't rly understand what you were saying before. anyway i powered it up again and pressed del and esc but it wouldn't go to the bios screen, it just keeps saying please select boot device over and over again

edit: ok i figured out how to get to the bios screen and updated it to version 4.10. but it's still not recognizing the graphics card. is it just faulty and i should get another one, or is it a compatibility issue somehow

on the mb make sure the 8 pin power plug on the top edge is connected. make sure you used the ones marked cpu. the six plus two connectors are for the gpu.
make sure on the gpu if there more the one power connector make sure it filled.
in the mb bios set the primany dispaly from auto to peg/pci and turn on muilt monitor beofre you put the gpu back in. this turn on both video ports at the same time.

yeah no definitely been using the 6 and 2 to plug the videocard in and the 8 pin to the motherboard. turned on multi monitor and they didn't really have a spot for primary display so i just made sure the graphics adapter was on pci. no luck. i called asus tech support and they think it might be the power supply, which, what. i think i'm just gonna take the graphics card back to the store tomorrow and see if i can get a different one.
