Assuming you are using the original USB cable included with the external drive, and assuming you're plugging the drive into USB ports that are capable of operating the drive, then it is likely your external has malfunctioned in one way or another. It's common with drives that get moved around alot.

Hi

Is this a 3.5" or 2.5" external HDD?
3.5" drives need external PSU for 12V
2.5" run on 5V
some laptops can not provide enouge power from single USB 2.0 port
(Y USB cable may help where 2 usb ports are used to ensure enough 5V current is available.)

Does drive make any noise to show it is spinning?

sometimes problem is with usb to sata chips in disk tray and a replacement usb to sata tray fixes the problem.

but some modern 2.5" external drives integrate the usb to sata chips onto HDD controller card so this will not work only a new HDD controller card)

some dying drives work intermitantly and if plugged into a desktop PC
(which provides specified 0.5 Amps per usb port)
may work long enough to extract data
