There may be an incompatibility between your 6 yo DIMM and the new one. Even matching newer DIMMs, from the same manufacturer, with the same part number can be problematical due to minor inconsistencies between the two.

When adding DIMMs, it is always best to sell or discard the old DIMM and buy a new "Matched Set" containing multiple DIMMs that are tested and guaranteed to work together. Failing that, you can try buying a new DIMM from the same manufacturer, with the same specs and part number, and it MIGHT work with your old DIMM.
