AMD Radeon 7950 Overheat?

Hai, well i recently upgraded my GPU with AMD Radeon 7950.

Right after i connected it i noticed that only 1 fan is spinning so i tried to mess a bit with the manual fan control in AMD OverDrive options and found out that the second fan starts spinning when the fan speed is set on 80% but okay.

So Idle temp is always around 30°C @ 20% Fan speed "Auto" but right after i start a game like GTA V my GPU temp rises up to 84°C @ 75-85% Fan speed "Auto".

But if i set the fan speed on 80%"Manual" before i start my game the temperature never goes over 60°C

Question:

Is it normal that the second fan starts spinning at 80% fan speed?

Are temps like this normal for a 7950 card ? and is this something i should be worried about?

Keeping the fan speed on 80%"Manual only when playing games" will reduce my cards lifetime?

Should i apply a fresh coat of thermal paste on the GPU chip?

Thanks

Probably that's the way it was designed since in any case high 80ºC was acceptable for those cards when they were produced.

It all depends on you really, whether you can tolerate or not the sound from a manually adjusted 80% speed or to leave the auto mode and accept that your card will hit the 80ºC~ temps, which I repeat, is acceptable for your video card.
If it is a used 7950 then yes, applying fresh thermal paste is something to do to ensure its proper cooling. As for the 2nd fan... not sure but most likely both fans should be working together all the time regardless the speed, you'll have to do some research based on your GPU brand and exact model since it varies from brand to brand and their respective models.

So i have applied fresh thermal paste on the GPU chip and oiled both of the fans.

Right away i noticed the temp in idle has dropped on 28°C but while gaming i'm getting high temps above 80°C @ 75-85% Fan speed "Auto" and still only 1 fan is spinning.

But if i change the fan speed manual to 80% Both of fans start spinning then its still the same it never goes over 60°C.

I noticed also this, "according to MSI Afterburn" the RPM of the fans has increased before when i set the fans on 80% speed "manual" the RPM was ~2700 and after i oiled them RPM has increased so now they're spinning with ~2980 RPM @ 80% speed "manual"

Oil has certainly improved their spin so that's good. I insist that your 2nd Fan should work all the time, perhaps some issue with its internal controller.
If you control it manually does the 2nd fan spin at a lower speed like 50%? or only when set at 80%? Does it spin when manually set to 85%?

It should certainly spin at 85%+ speed regardless of auto/manual setting so there is a problem indeed, if you have the chance to get it replaced you should go ahead. Otherwise your best option imo is to create a custom speed profile, assuming of course you get that 2nd fan working even at lower speeds like 40% etc.

Well here is the thing, the 2nd fan starts spinning when the manual speed is set exactly at 80% and above that to 100% no matter if i'm playing games or in idle, at any other % lower than 80% it just don't work.

The second fan always starts exactly at 80% speed"manual", if i'm using "auto fan setting" there is no difference once the fan reaches 80% speed or above then the 2nd fan starts spinning but then the GPU temp is already at c

So no matter if in manual or auto control the second fan always starts at 80%.

The auto fan control has to reach 80% in order to start the second fan right after that the GPU starts cooling down, but when it cools down the fan speed also lowers below 80% "second Fan stops" and temp is rising again.

Here is the difference while gaming:

Fan Speed "manual" - 60°C @ 80% speed
Fan Speed "auto" - ~83°C @ 75-84% speed

Probably that's the way it was designed since in any case high 80ºC was acceptable for those cards when they were produced.

Well i guess i'll just keep with using the manual control "at gaming only" since the temperature is much lower and the fan noise is the same no matter if i'm using manual 80% or Auto.

Thanks
