I'm planning to buy a workstation class laptop. I would be using this for working with databases, multiple VMs. I'm thinking to choose either Haswell Quad-core with DDR3 1600 MHz RAM or Skylake Quad-core with DDR4-2133 MHz RAM. I'm not very sure of performance difference between DDR3 and DDR4. As I'm planning to use memory intensive programs like VMs, it's better to go for bigger RAM. How DDR3 compares with DDR4. I won't use the laptop for any games. Whether the extra bandwidth of DDR4-2133MHZ will be useful?

Should I go for 32GB DDR3 1600MHz RAM or 16GB DDR4 2133 MHz RAM?

Appreciate your suggestions in selecting the right RAM.

Thanks in advance :)

Ram speed makes relatively little difference with Intel cpus.

I think that ram size will trump ram speed whichever laptop you pick.

If price is not a big issue, I would pick the skylake laptop with 32gb of 2133 speed ram.

And... unless portability is essential, you are likely to do better with a desktop.
