I currently have 8GB (2X4) DDR3 1600MHz ram in my PC and would like to upgrade to 16GB. The problem I have is that I want to have 16GB 2400MHz eventually but can only afford to get another 8GB right now.

My question is if I can pick up 8GB (2X4) of 2400MHz of the same type of ram, and run it at the same speeds and voltage (underclock) as my other 8GB 1600MHz? This way, I can get another 8GB 2400MHz when I'm ready.

Solution
It should work but may require some additional messing around with timings and clocks to get stable. The only way to find out for sure when mixing RAM and deviating from the motherboard/RAM manufacturer's QVL is to try it yourself.

BTW, the faster the memory, the touchier quad-DIMM configurations get. If you want to reduce the likelihood of future trouble at 2400MT/s, you should consider aiming for 2x8GB instead of 4x4GB.
