I was recently reading about the Bitdefender Box (albeit poor reviews) and the upcoming F-Secure Sense and it has me wondering if I need a separate security device / firewall for my home network, which has a 5 computers, a few phones, and other connected devices like a garage door and Nest thermostat (there are a few more things connected). It all sits behinds a Linksys router e4200 that I loaded DD-WRT on.
I was reading a little about Untangle, WatchGuard, and PFSense too, but a lot of it sounds like overkill.

Is it wise to purchase a dedicated device that sits between the modem and router or behind the router and all the devices?
Would they require much in the way of management?
Should I buy a computer and run software dedicated for this purpose? PFSense?
Thanks for your thoughts.

We have over 50 connected devices and just use whatever the router uses. Everyone in the house is pretty good at not clicking on bad things, avoiding random zips, etc.

The thing with hacking now, is that it's all about money. Can someone hack your nest and turn up your heat? Maybe. Is it worth the time and trouble, not at all. They want credit card numbers, bank login info, paypal info, steam and origin info, anything that makes them money.

There is so much you can strengthen your front door. Modern hacking don't attack your front door any way, they use easier methods like phishing: entice you to click something, and BAM they are in. The best protection is, ta-da old fashion BACKUPS. But you say backups is so much hassle! so is configuring and understanding these front door locks it seems.

I agree with above, if you are doing it for fun and knowledge, fine.
