Hello all, I have a problem with a laptop. I can't work with my OS, I can't format it, I can't use a Ubuntu live CD or Ubuntu live USB. In all these cases after to start in a few seconds or minutes I get only a background screen (the rest disappear -icons,menu,cursor,etc etc-), and I can't do nothing (only press power button to shut down).

I'm going to write some examples:

  • - I start my windows 7 (I can use it) and after a few seconds or minutes I get a black screen, I can't do nothing.
EDIT: if I access here in Windows 7 secure mode I HAVE NOT ANY PROBLEM. Why?
    - I try to format to other windows 7 and during the steps to format it I get only a background screen (in a few seconds), I can't do nothing.
    - I use a Ubuntu live CD (I can use it) and after a few seconds or minutes I get only the background screen, I can't do nothing.
    - I use a Ubuntu live USB (I can use it) and after a few seconds or minutes I get only the background screen, I can't do nothing.

I think that the problem can be a CPU overheating. But I can't check it because I can't access to any OS and if I go to the BIOS I don't see the CPU temperature.

What do you think, Can be a CPU overheating the problem?

Thanks.

NOTE: some laptop information:

  • *Processor: Intel Dual Core T3200
    *RAM: 3 GB RAM DDR2 800 Mhz
    *Hard Disk: 160 GB
*Graphic Card: Mobile Intel GMA 4500MHD

I would suspect heat as the problem also. Check YouTube for how to videos for cleaning your laptop - look for the complete model number if possible. Disassembly is required to properly clean the fans and heatsink. If the heatsink is removed, thermal compound will need to be replaced.

Thank you C12Friedman for your answer :) . But I have news that the laptop cpu fan was cleaned 2 weeks ago approximately :( .

And just now I have a question that I can't find solution: Why hasn't Windows 7 SECURE MODE any problem? (It runs without any problem, however in NORMAL MODE -or Ubuntu live CD or USB, DVD Windows 7 to format- as I said after a few seconds or minutes I get only a background screen and I can't do nothing.

HERE I HAVE NEWS: I activated Caps Lock -led on- and after to get only the background screen I can't desactivate Caps Lock -led on-. What does it mean? ).

OTHER NEWS: While Ubuntu live CD or USB is loading in a moment appear this message (it appeared other times but I didn't give importance): 0.278482 ] pci 0000:02:00.0: unsupported PM cap regs version (7) . In my personal laptop I don't get that message when I run Ubuntu live CD or USB.

I tried to look for the problem:

  • - In Windows 7 SECURE MODE:

    • * Check Device Manager. All are OK.
      * Check if Automatically restart is uncheck. Yes, it is. Then if it's uncheck in SAFE MODE it's uncheck in NORMAL MODE too.
      * In Automatically restart, there is an option that if System failure it generate to me: memory.dmp (I open it but there is ONLY a problem on MARCH, not now).
      * Try to run Windows 7 in NORMAL MODE, after I run SAFE MODE and I go to: Event Viewer -> Windows Logs -> System. And there are only activity when I access in SAFE MODE.
      * Install some applications to check CPU temp, but only appear in %. It's low but strange that it doesn't appear in degrees.
    - In BIOS: CPU temp doesn't appear.

Like I said there is a big question that I don't understand: Why can I access in Windows 7 SECURE MODE and I can't in other Operating Systems?

Thankss

I'm still staying on the heat thing (for now). When the laptop was cleaned was thermal compound and any thermal pads replaced? I'm specifically thinking graphics heat since Ubuntu isn't even working from disk or USB. If your laptop has a dedicated graphics card, it won't be working in Safe Mode but would probably attempt to work with Ubuntu - why my focus is on the graphics - If you don't have dedicated graphics, never mind.

Thank you for your reply. Sorry, I write late.

An IT technician was looking for some solution, but he could not find nothing wrong. Finally the useful laptop components (RAM, Hard Disk, ...) were extract and a new laptop was bought.
