Hey, I got this machine when I left for college. I've used it to game (Fallout 3 and Skyrim mostly) but it never performed as well as I thought it should. I don't know enough about PCs to know if I'm wrong. I was hoping someone could help evaluate my hardware and whether or not it's going to be worth anything with the new releases. I copied info from my dxdiag. I hope I have given the relevant information. Let me know if I can provide anything else of use.

Solution
It was not a very powerful gaming laptop when it was new. The quad core i7-2630QM is still considered a pretty good CPU since CPU performance does increase as much as GPU performance with each new generation.

The problem is the nVidia GT 540m which was not really considered a "gaming GPU" it was more like a good "mainstream GPU". I have a Lenovo IdeaPay Y470 with an i5-2410m and nVidia GT 550m which I thought was decent for playing games back when I first bought it. I no longer use it to play games.

The GT 540m is not very powerful anymore. The Intel HD 5500 graphics core in Haswell generation CPUs (like the i5-5200u) is considered almost as powerful as the GT 540m. Most mobile Intel Skylake generation CPUs have the Intel HD 520...

Most mobile Intel Skylake generation CPUs have the Intel HD 520 graphics core and that is considered to be a little more powerful than the GT 540m.

For modern games you are generally limited to play them at low graphic settings if you want decent performance. I might install Fallout 4 on my Lenovo Y470 just to see how well the GT 550m can handle the game at 1366x768, but that laptop is prone to overheating now. I probably have to rip it apart to clean out dust and replace the thermal to fix the issue, but I don't really have the time for it.

Awesome. Thank you for your answer. I thought it might be the GPU that was killing me. I'm at least somewhat comforted by the fact that I got the performance I paid for and didn't miss out on a stronger machine due to some fluke.
