Hey guys,

My current build it

Intel i5-4440
GTX 970
8GB ram

I am getting an upgrade for Christmas, I can either get an Intel I5-4690k and an 8gb stick of ram

Or an intel i7-4790k with no other upgrades,

Which would be better performance wise? I seem to feel my pc is quite weak, lagging on certain games.

Thanks

Solution

No, the base clock of the 4790K is 4.0 vs 3.6 for the 4790, and the price difference is small.
What kinds of issues are you experiencing that you need an upgrade? Weak and Lagging is a little broad. If you feel games and programs are loading too slowly then adding an SSD will be he best upgrade. If your internet game performance is the issue with games lagging a CPU upgrade will help if it's a CPU intensive game like WOW. Otherwise the problem could be with your service thru your ISP or the router you are using. a direct connection via cable is always best. If its a GPU intensive game perhaps upgrading your GPU is the answer.

Reply to all three, I play Counterstrike on Med settings, i was told i would get 400+ fps with my gpu, and i get 130 with EVERYTHING closed on my computer. As for the motherboard i have a GIGABYTE GA-H87M-HD3 LGA 1150 Intel H87 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard With UEFI BIOS

I7-4790K will run at 4.0/4.4 turbo with no overclocking.
That is probably your best choice. Extra ram is nice, but not needed unless you are multitasking while gaming.

And... adding another different stick of ram is not guaranteed to work at all.

If you have not yet done so, ask for a SSD. It makes all the difference in the world for everyday work.

What GPU are you using?

How could i see if my Motherboard is Overclockable?

My motherboard is

GIGABYTE GA-H87M-HD3 LGA 1150 Intel H87 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard With UEFI BIOS

Your best bang for the buck would be a i7-4790K and run it at stock.
Save the cost of a new motherboard.
There is very little value to the gamer running higher than the stock 4.0 with 4.4 turbo.
You might get to 4.6 depending on your luck of getting a golden chip.

Got it, Thanks dude. Big help.

May I ask what makes one chip better than another? It's just a curiosity I have.

There are always minor imperfections in the manufacturing process.
Chips that do not meet standards are thrown away, or possibly converted into lesser clocked processors.
Some chips will exceed the standards and those are the golden samples.
