Power supply compatibility question

I've learned that before I can upgrade my GPU, I first desperately need a new PSU (Currently running one with 255w). The problem is that while I'm trying to learn how to tell if the PSU I'm looking at is compatible, all I'm finding are unique cases ("Does this work with that?"), rather than a method of determining the answer myself. Simply put: What do you need to look for when it comes to compatibility?

Look at the form factor on the case and then on the PSU (e.g. ATX). if they match then it's compatible

ATX power supplies have a defined width and height but the depth of them can vary from power supply to power supply, and some deeper ones may have trouble in smaller cases. Case specifications usually include maximum PSU length, too.

So then basically the only limiting factor is whether it will physically fit in the case? There's no steps for compatibility between motherboard and psu?

No all modern PSUs come with all the necessary cables to fit to your motherboard

Wow thanks! That's a relief. Now I feel comfortable upgrading mine. I realized that my 255w psu is what was holding my gpu back.

The cables have been standard since around 2005.
