I have a broken blade on mine, no idea how it happened but it gets super loud at times. I don't want to spend alot of money since I'm getting a completely new system in a few months. I just need something to get me by until then, so nothing fancy. Do I need to look at motherboard compatibility or anything like that? I've never used anything but stock fans...

A great low budget aftermarket heatsink is the cooler master hyper 212 evo (http://www.coolermaster.com/cooling/cpu-air-cooler/hyper-212-evo/). Yes you will have to look for compatibility, check what socket your motherboard has and when buying a heatsink look for what socket types it is compatible with.

Thanks! I've been looking online at them. My case is the older Antec 900 from like 2011ish and I have the AMD 6 core. If a heatsink says AM3 but my CPU says AM3+, are they compatible or do both have to have the + sign?

it should be fine. (AM3+ is a modification of the AM3 socket. It has one additional pin for new Bulldozer-based AM3+ processors)
