Running two sets of dual-channel DIMMs with different speeds

I currently have a pair of 8GB Crucial Ballistix in my computer, but I was thinking about upgrading the ram to a bigger size. I understand that it's advised to use ram that was tested and packaged together, and I really don't want my current set to be taken out, so I was just going to buy a new set of 16GB and plug it in alongside the current 8GB.

My question is, if these two sets are both running dual-channel, would the new set operate at the speed of the first set if the first was a slower speed? Or would each dual-channel set operate at the speed it advertises? I know that two sticks grouped together would operate at the lower stick's speeds, but was unsure about how this scenario would work.

All will operate at the same data rate (speed) and timings. There is no set "What they will run at" , normally the BIOS will set them to the mobos default or possibly the speed of the slowest - from there you can manually try to set them to whatever you want to try, i.e. say you have good 1600 sticks and get 1866, IF they play they will prob come up at 1333 or 1600, you can then try to set to 1866 orwhatever - if they play and you need help, give a holler ;)
