how do I connect my laptop to my samsung smart TV so I see my computer screen on the TV?

hello, thanks for your quick answer...I have a windows 7 Toshiba laptop and a Samsung smart TV. I bought a couple of cables today but a reagular HDMI cable hooking them both up (same "plug"on each side), nothing happens. I pit the TV on 'screen mirroring' but I could not go further... I am lost at what I need to do!
