Can CPU overheat due to incompatible motherboard?

My motherboard is an MSI Z97-G43, and I got an Intel Core i7-4790K for CPU. The i7 is a recent purchase and I was dumb enough not to check for compatibility. According to MSI, the i7 I have is not supported by the board (my previous i5 is).

Is it the motherboard that causes the i7 to reach 100 degrees celcius because they are incompatible, or is the i7 faulty?

I realised this by accident after checking the BIOS. Earlier I have been having serious lag on windows and even BSODs.

Will do that. But what would the incompatibility do?

Probably the voltage control on the older BIOS wasn't designed to supply the i7 correctly. As for the heat, that could be caused by improper voltage draw/supply which the BIOS may fix, or it could be you didn't apply the thermal paste correctly and need to reapply it, there are a ton of videos online that show how to do so properly.

the haswell refresh CPU do react like this, if the motherboard´s BIOS is not up to date. The compatibility list on the MSI homepage does list your CPU since BIOS version D1. Now D8 is the latest:
http://www.msi.com/product/motherboard/support/Z97-G43-GAMING.html#support_download

download it, extract it to an USB flash drive, reboot, while MSI Logo is shown, enter BIOS, click on M-Flash, select the USB thumb drive and follow instructions
